What in thr world do leaping lords , french hens , swimming swans , and especially the partridge that won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas??

From 1558 until 1829 , Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a song for young children. It has two levels of meaning:the surface meaning plus the hidden message known only to members of the church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves are the Old and New Testament

Three French hens stand for Faith , Hope , Love

Four calling birds are the 4 gospels of Matthew,Mark,Luke and John

Five golden rings recall the Torah, or Law ,the first 5 books of the Old Testament

Six geese a laying stand for the 6 days of creation.

Seven swans-a-swimming represent the seven-fold gifts of the Holy Spirit , Prophecy,Serving,Teaching,Exhortation,Contribution,Leadership, and Mercy

Eight maids a-milking are the 8 beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing are the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit ,Love,Joy,Peace,Patience,Kindness,Goodness,Faithfulness,Gentleness, and Self Control.

Ten lords leaping are the 10 Commandments.

Eleven pipers are for the 11 disciples.

Twelve drummers symbolize the 12 points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.
