Not a destination, but a journey . . .
That’s how Children International sees its progress at their Sahay project in Calcutta, India over the past ten years. Recently, the project welcomed its 20,000th child into the program, young Palas Sardar.
In honor of the achievement, the Sahay project has even more aspirations. They are planning to build a model “para,” or neighborhood, in the village where the program began. The goal is to broaden the focus of C.I.’s work beyond traditional sponsorship benefits to include infrastructure and neighborhood improvements.
The objective of the model para is to ensure proper facilities and to create opportunities for people in the neighborhood to have access to education, nutrition, basic health facilities, sanitation, safe drinking water and other necessities.”
A lofty goal . . .but one that will have a truly remarkable effect. This strategic planning will draw on every experience C.I.’s staff has gained over the past decade. C.I. hopes to create a model that can be replicated in other communities in India.
