I am currently attending the Children's Pastoral Conference and participated in a communication seminar. The following are some notes from the seminar. These are excellent and relevant to being able to present God's truth in an effective way. The Speaker was John Rogers ex-pastor of children's ministries to a number of large churches in US. I hope this is a blessing to you as it is to me.
4 Keys to Great Communication
After a variety of teaching methods have been tried, the question is still pending…ARE THE STUDENTS (PEOPLE) GETTTING IT?
This we know...... a connection needs to be made between biblical truth and a student's (person's) daily experiences.
4 questions to keep in mind when preparing to present God's truths to students are:
What do you want kids to know?
Why do you want kids to know it?
What are they supposed to do?
Why are they supposed to do it?
POINT #1 KNOW WHAT YOU EXPECT STUDENTS TO KNOW.
When presenting God's truth to Students the question becomes, What do you want kids to know? then everything you say must POINT to the POINT.
POINT #2. TEACH YOUR LESSONS FROM A COMPELLING SINGLE STATEMENT.
What is the Point? The focus statement must be simple, short and to the point you are trying to make. For Example; ”God never makes mistakes”, “God is buff when things get though” “God is faithful and you can trust him”.
This is where the students LEARN IT!
POINT #3. BULD A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE BIBLICAL WORD AND THE STUDENT'S EVERY DAY EXPERIENCE.
Here you want to keep in mind the students attitude "Why should I care?" Your message will look different if we keep this question in mind. Kids are usually unengaged and we need to make the lesson relevant to them.
This is where the students LINK IT!
POINT #4. GIVE THEM A MISSION TO GO AND DO SOMETHING SPECIFIC.
This is where it goes from your story to their story and students LIVE IT OUT!
Your Goal in preparing your lesson is for students to:
Learn it, Link it & Live it out!
