Ezek 2:4; "I am sending you to them who are stubborn and obstinate children, and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.'
Ezek 3:7; yet the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, since they are not willing to listen to Me. Surely the whole house of Israel is stubborn and obstinate.
Rom 10:21; But as for Israel He says, "ALL THE DAY LONG I HAVE STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS TO A DISOBEDIENT AND OBSTINATE PEOPLE."
One of the five points of Calvinism is called "irresistible grace". It is the "I" in TULIP. It's very closely tied to predestination.
It is the belief that once God picks you to be saved ( predestination ), you cannot refiuse and say no.
God is a little like the GodFather ( no pun intended ). He makes you an offer you cannot refuse.
I confess I read the New Testament more than the Old Testament, but I love reading the Old Testament, it's the part of the Bible that reveals God's
nature to us.
Exod 33:3; "Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, because you are an obstinate people, and I might destroy you on the way."
Exod 33:5; For the LORD had said to Moses, "Say to the sons of Israel, 'You are an obstinate people; should I go up in your midst for one moment, I would destroy you. Now therefore, put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what I shall do with you.'"
One verse commonly used to support irresistible grace is...
1Jn 4:19; We love, because He first loved us.
The thought is, we have no choice but to love Jesus, because He loved us. But the Bible says for God so loved the world... and yet the entire world
does not love Jesus. Some people say I love my wife or my husband because they first loved me, and that's great, but then why are there so many
divorces? The Bible says it's possible to leave your first love.
Rev 2:4; 'But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
All through the Bible God reveals Himself to the Jews. He parts the sea, He gives Manna from heaven, what do the people do? Build a golden calf.
The Jews saw the walls of Jericho fall. They saw giants defeated. They saw Elijah call fire down from heaven. They saw Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego
come out of the fiery furnace, and yet... all through the Bible, time after time... the Jews turn away from God over and over again.
Even if the New Testament, Jesus wanted to save the Jews.
Matt 23:37; "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.
Luke 13:34; "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!
But they would not allow it. Just like the Jews of the Old Testament, they saw Jesus walk on water, calm the storm, feed the multitude, raise the dead, and yet...
Acts 7:51; "You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
The Holy Spirit doesn't force us to be saved. We can resist Him if we really want to. At the end of the day, this really comes back to freedom of choice.
God desire "all men" to be saved, and yet many won't be.
1Tim 2:3; This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
1Tim 2:4; who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
This is because people can choose not to be saved.
2Pet 3:9; The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
... yet some people remain stubborn and obstinate.
