Alive is a film I watched some years ago, and the story is a true story and it is based on the experiences of a group of young rugby
players. The team left Uruguay on friday 13th October 1972, the plane they were travelling in was never to reach its destination, it crashed
in the Andes mountians. Several of the passengers died instantley but most survived. The captian of the team instantly took charge of the
situation, taking stock of their provisions and issuing people with tasks to do. They discovered that there was only chocolate to eat and
wine to drink, very little of each and definitley not enough to sustain all of them for long. They had a radio from the plane but the
batteries were in the tail section which was some distance away from the rest of the crashed aircraft and the survivors. A decision was
made, lots were drawn and a group of people set off to recover the batteries from the tail section of the plane, taking with them only what
they had, chocolate and wine to sustain them on their
journey. After a night and days walking in the thick snow they came upon a section of the plane but to their dissappointment it was not the
tail section, Exhausted from their journey with only chocolate to eat and wine to drink, conquered by the mountian and weather
conditions, they constructed a sledge from plane sections and headed back to the others. Upon their return they had a revelation, the
PENNY DROPPED, they needed meat, but the only meat available was their family and friends who had died in the crash. WOW.!
Finally they all made a pact to eat the meat of their dead comerades in order to survive and they once again set out for the tail section of
the plane, taking the radio with them this time. In a few days they reached the tail section and recovered the batteries but because there
were so many wires on the radio and the batteries they were unable to repair it. Another decision had to be made. Knowing that eating
"meat" had allowed them to get this far, do they go back and tell their family and friends that the radio was no good, and they had failed,
or do they push on? So they split up, two went back, and the other two, Nando and Roberto pushed on. Before they set off, each in their
separate directions, they made another pact, they had recovered a pair of red trainers from the reckage, one of which was given to the
team returning and the other to those going on to attempt to bring help, and they said to one another, When the two trainers become a
pair again, they would all have been rescued from the mountian. Therfore Nando and Roberto went on, believing that as long as they
continued eating "meat" and walking in the same direction that sooner or later they would reach CIVILISATION, help and rescue for
their family and friends. Imagine this, picture this in your mind, Nando and Roberto, two people in the middle of nowhere, on a barran
mountian, the only colours they could see was the blinding white of the snow the grey of rocks, and sometimes a glimps of the blue sky. So
walking in the same direction day in day out, and eating meat day in day out, all they could do were eat and walk and talk to each other,
and to encourage one another on their journey, night and day same direction eating meat, night and day for about 30 days, untill the day
they stood on top of one of those mountians and saw land and trees, green insted of white, but even though
they could now at a distance see green land it was only a promise. They could now see the promise but not stand in the promise, so they
kept eating "MEAT", but now they didn't just see the white of the snow and the grey of the rocks. They had a promise, and in that promise
were warmth and hope, and now true direction and a place to see and aim for. But at that time it was only a promise, they could see the
promise but not stand in the promise, so they had to carry on going forward eating "meat" and walking towards the promise they could
now see, knowing that they still had the cold, pain, and many more hardships to endure just to get to that promise, and even when they got
to the promise, oh YES ! in the promise were more colours than just white and grey, they could now feel warmth, and touch liquid water
see animals instead of just each other, but still no human contact, no rescue for their friends and family still on the mountain, so they had
to continue on in the same direction eating "meat" until the day they were found, and their friends and family left behind on the mountain
were rescued.
