Both Peter and Paul say God wants everyone to be saved.
2Pet 3:9; The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
1Tim 2:3; This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
1Tim 2:4; who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
So then, if this is the will of God, does that mean everyone is saved?
According to Jesus, the answer is no. In fact it seems the majority will not be saved.
Matt 7:13; "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.
Matt 7:14; "For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Many go through the gate that leads to destruction. "Many". Few go through the gate that leads to life. "Few". It would seem that few, is less than many.
Someone asked Jesus "Are just a few people being saved?". This was His answer.
Luke 13:23; And someone said to Him, "Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?" And He said to them,
Luke 13:24; "Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
Again, we see that word "many". Many will try to enter the narrow door, but will not be able.
There is another verse I would like to add, for a little context here.
Rev 7:9; After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands;
It says here, that a "great multitude" ... so large, that no one could count them. ( However, I suspect God knows how many there are ). These people have white robes and are before the throne of Jesus.
If we keep reading, we find out these were people who were martyred in the Great Tribulation, but my point here is, even just this group of people, is a quite large number of people.
So then, is the Bible contradicting itself? Which is it? A large group or a small group?
Well, there are currently about 8 billion people on the Earth. That's just the people who are alive right now today. Presumably, depending on which internet article you read, there are more people on the Earth alive today,
than all the people who have ever been on the Earth over the several thousand years. If you're a Christian that believes in creation, that would be since Adam and Eve.
So let me speculate here here for a second, and take a wild guess. Let's say there have been about 15 billion so far. Let us also say, that only 10 percent of those people get saved. ( I know this is all guess work ).
That's still 1.5 billion people that get saved. ( Assuming the 10 percent is correct ). It could be more, it could be less, I really don't know. But either way, Jesus says... "few" find the path to life. "many" find the path to death.
