For we know that if our earthly house, [this] tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 2 Corinthians 5:1-3 NKJV
In the above scripture passage the apostle Paul likens our physical bodies to a tent. If you’ve ever slept outside in a tent, you know that it has severe limitations, especially when it comes to cold or stormy weather. Also, tents—even expensive, high-quality ones—are prone to wearing out relatively quickly.
Like literal tents, our physical bodies don’t last forever—usually seventy to eighty years—before they wear out and cease function. But when that happens, Paul says, we will receive new bodies—eternal houses—that will never wear out, never grow old, and never die.
When you feel anxious about growing old, even dying one day, take heart. The body you live in now is only a preview of something infinitely better.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I know that as I grow older, my body will begin to wear down and wear out. Eventually, my earthly tent will die and my soul will leave this earth. Thank You for the new body You’ve prepared for me and for the place where I’ll live forever with You.
