Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What [are] these stones?' "then you shall let your children know, saying, 'Israel crossed over this Jordan on dry land'; Joshua 4:21-22 NKJV
Having crossed the Jordan River at flood stage on dry ground, Joshua instructed the people to build a monument of twelve stones as a memorial to the miracle.
That pile of stones continually encouraged God’s people to temper their anxieties with trust.
Jesus supported this kind of anxiety reduction when He said that life was about more than food and clothes. He said that when people prioritized His kingdom, their other needs were met as well. Then He added, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke 12:34 NIV).
Longings of the heart provide the deeper answer for anxiety. Long for money, you’ll be stressed. Long for popularity, you’ll be worried. Long for success, you’ll be anxious. Long for God, you’ll be filled.
From the center of his angst, King David wrote, “I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none” (Psalm 69:20 NIV). He discovered that when the world around you can’t answer the need, God can.
The Lord provided rest from anxiety for Joshua, His own disciples, and King David. He can do the same for you!
Prayer: Lord, help me find answers for my anxieties in learning to long for Your kingdom rather than my own.
