Are bay leaves poisonous?

hi sister jonah,
Bay leaves are not poisonous. It is a very famous spice used in most Indian meals.The most famous Biryani is practically incomplete without it. But they are mostly not eaten they are just added in some meat dishes.

Hi Natashea, thanks for your reply. But, if they're not poisonous, then why do some recipes say to remove them after the recipe is done, such as Chicken with Dumpins?

To anwser my own question: I found this out from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia online.

It said;

" Mountain laurel leaves are poisonous to certain livestock and are not sold anywhere as a culinary herb (Britannica).

This has led to the mistaken belief that bay leaves should be removed from food after cooking because they might poison humans.

Bay leaves are safe to eat.

However, a person may accidentally swallow a leaf; and since the leaves remain stiff, even after several hours of cooking, this sometimes causes cutting of the larynx and should be avoided."

You're safe! :embarasse

Bay leaves are safe to eat.

It's the Mountain laurel leaves that are poisonous, and only to certain livestock and are not sold anywhere as a culinary herb (Britannica).

So, you are safe, they are not poisonous to people.

hi sister Jonah,
I am sorry because I am replying after a long time.
Well my mother said that bay leaves are very strong and could be very acidic for the stomach. I think that is also one of the reasons why we remove bay leaves.

Thank you all for your replies, it's so good to know that Bay Leaves are not poisonous.

Your Sister in Christ Jesus, Always!
