It's lovely to chat to those of advanced years. Oh what a wonderful golden age when everyone looked after each other, obeyed the law, respected their elders' and went to church every Sunday. Listen to what they say, life was beautiful, life through the rose tinted specs that is. For me I passed middle age some time ago so I remember the 60s and 70s and there was some nice and some not so nice. What? Old days that were not so nice?

Well in the USA there was racial segregation. In major cities blacks had their own schools, public transport, rest rooms etc. Worse still in South Africa and Rhodesia . In the UK our racism was more covert, one would stand on the bus rather than sit next to a black woman. I went to a secondary school of 500 boys, just one was Aisian and he was bullied mercilessly. TV comedy shows were outrageously racist and sexist and certainly don't feature nowadays on UK Gold, Love Thy Neighbour, Till Death Us Do Part, On The Buses, Never Mind the Quality Feel the Width (only those from the UK born early 60's and before will know what I'm going on about.) No. 1 in the charts for 6 weeks, Chuck Berry, My Ding a Ling.

Now oldies with rose tinted specs is now't new. Haggiai 2:3-9 -

‘Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, is this not in your eyes as nothing? Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the Lord ; ‘and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the Lord , ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘ According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so My Spirit remains among you; do not fear!’ “For thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘And in this place I will give peace,’ says the Lord of hosts.”

A message to those building the second temple to ignore the grumpy old men fondly recalling the first one. You see God is far more interested in our future than our past.

Hi Andyindauk, I was born in 1942, The war was on and Britain was, in London at least, shell shocked. People were dying and nobody knew who would be next and many women were hearing their men were dead. It was understandable that people, in those circumstances, would take comfort where they could find it. It's also understandable that people facing the unknown, would be more inclined to look to God. So it was a time of confusion. It could be said that the second world war was the beginning of the promiscuous age, out of which was born the sixties and seventies where promiscuity came of age. I don't agree that us wrinklies saw things through rose tinted glasses, that's patronising. Things in those days had restrictions, we had prayers at school and religious education. The knowledge of God and Jesus were in the mix, although the times were changing. I was a precocious child and prone to sin, ended up being locked up and was in fact a pretty unhappy person. Until the 60s when Jesus found me. Then I had many years of pain while he sorted me out. Now at two years off eighty, I live a life of joy with a wife who's love bring tears to my eyes and children that delight me, so, far from having rose tinted glasses, I think like most oldies like me, we have a pretty sound grasp of most things. Sin, don't forget, has been around since Adam. Bless you Bro.
