When I was in the military, every now and then I had to do guard duty. I was never in any wars, but sometimes we had to guard the office, or equipment, or the barracks, or a number of different things.
Whenever I see the phrase "be on your guard", I always picture a soldier with a sword or gun.. "guarding" something.
Luke 12:15; Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions."
Luke 17:3; "Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
Luke 21:34; "Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap;
Acts 20:28; "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
Php 4:7; And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
1Tim 6:20; O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called "knowledge"—
2Tim 1:12; For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.
2Tim 1:14; Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.
2Tim 4:15; Be on guard against him yourself, for he vigorously opposed our teaching.
2Pe_3:17; You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness,
1Jn 5:21; Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
It surprises some people to see how often we are told to guard ourselves against different things, and be on guard for other things.
