At this, I woke up and looked around. My sleep had been very sweet. Jeremiah 31:26 NLT
Where do you fall on the sleep spectrum? Some guys can’t wait to lie down. Others think they’re missing something when they rest. As with so much of life, there’s a balance to be found—a certain amount of rest is essential to our health and well-being. Too much or too little can be harmful.
Ideally, we find the proper amount of sleep for our age, health, and personality, then regularly get that. Even better if the sleep is, like Jeremiah’s, “pleasant and satisfying.”
Remember that he lived during the decline and ultimate devastation of his nation of Judah. But God gave Jeremiah promises of better days to come, of the restoration of his people and nation . And that made for sweet, restful sleep, even in the midst of difficult days.
We as Christians live in similarly troubled times, and we’ve been given similar promises. Even better promises, really, since God “has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Those blessings include adoption into God’s family, the forgiveness of sins, knowledge of His will, and the understanding that all things will be ultimately renewed in and through Jesus (vv. 4-10).
If that doesn’t lead to better sleep, what will?
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for providing rest. Remind me of Your great promises so my sleep will be pleasant and satisfying.
