Greetings,
here are some scriptures and notes to get started with:
regarding Judas, (betrayal)
Matthew 27:3-5
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
(The wages of sin is death - those thirty pieces of silver paid for the cemetery and burial of Judas Iscariot)
and regarding Peter, (denial)
Matthew 26:
Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cockrel crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cockrel crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
which in Scriptural terms is not a light matter...
Jesus said:
Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven. 33But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 10:32,33
the Apostle Paul wrote:
It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with Him, we shall also live with Him:
If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him: if we deny Him, He also will deny us:
If we believe not, yet He abideth faithful: He cannot deny Himself.
2Timothy 2:11-13
and the Apostle Peter wrote:
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2Peter 2:1
( Jesus said to Peter before he denied Him:
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
Luke 22:31-32 )
- Is there a difference between the betrayal of Judas (son of Simon Iscariot) and the denial of Peter (Simon the son of Jona; Cephas)?
- Also, are there other references in Scripture of either betrayal or denyal?
