I found a Bible at my grandpa's house. It is a 1979 Good News Bible and in-between the OT and NT it has 15 books and they are refered to as Deuterocanonicals and Apocrypha. The intro said these books were interspread among the OT and part of the Septuagint Greek text. I have never heard of these before. Are they legitimate or like the book of Mormon? I was curious if anyone with more knowledge than I knew anything about this?

The apocrypha consists of books that are categorized as deuterocanonical , meaning they are a second set of books canonized by the early Roman Catholic church.

These books were rejected by Jerome when he translated from septuagint (Greek translation) into Latin forming what is called the Vulgate bible. Jerome rejected these books on the basis that there was no original Hebrew transcript.

I think that the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthadox are the only people to recognize them as canonical. These books were not recognized by the Protestant leaders and were omitted.

In short the apocrypha books are not doctinally sound and should not be considered for reading unless the study is for an historical topic only. For spiritual growth and guidance stick to the canonized Old and New testaments.

Thank you jiggyfly. I knew someone would be able to advise me on this.

God Bless,

Michell

When I was in the Catholic Church, they did readings from apochryphal books as Bible readingsw, as you say. I didn't have much grounding in Scripture at that time, but I do remember thinking that the Book of Wisdom (apochryphal) seemed to read a lot like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes and was therefore redundant.

In the book "Maccabes"(I don't remember if it was I or II but I read it years ago), there is the story of the history of the Jewish celebration of Hanakka. (Festival of lights). I found it is interesting.
