Mark 16:2-6 Context Summary

Ø Mark proclaims that Jesus is alive!
Ø After telling the disciples, several times over three years, that He will die and rise again, Jesus’ work is finally done.
Ø But the disciples are in hiding.
Ø Only the women come to the tomb, carrying burial spices instead of hope.
Ø Among them are Mary Magdalene, the “other” Mary, and Salome, along with Joanna and some of the other women who have supported Jesus’ ministry (Luke 8:3; 24:10).
Ø They have come to care for Him one last time, but He is not there as He is raised!

Chapter Context:

Ø After the mandatory time of rest, several of Jesus’ female followers approach His tomb intending to anoint the body.
Ø Their primary concern is who will open the tomb for them so they can honor Jesus’ remains.
Ø They arrive to find the tomb open, empty and watched over by angels.
Ø After hearing from the angels, the women leave in fear, speaking only to the disciples.

V2: Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb.

Ø Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome watched
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus bury Jesus.
Ø Bringing spices, the women came to anoint Jesus’ body in the tomb early on the next morning of the Sabbath.
Ø This is a sign of their love, devotion, and respect for Jesus.
· Application:
Ø In our Christian lives today, we must also show our love, devotion, and respect to the Lord Jesus Christ.

V3: and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

Ø The women prepare the spices and return to the tomb is a mixture of faith and doubt.

· Application:

Ø This is the calling of Christ-followers.

Ø We do what we are called to do, even if we are not sure how we will get it done.

V4: But when they looked up, they saw that the very large stone had been rolled away.

Ø The women have come with what they can bring to honour Jesus, knowing it’s insufficient.

Ø They are blessed to discover the stone has already been rolled away.

· Application:

Ø The stone (sin) that keeps us from Jesus is moved away by the Lord Himself.

Ø All we need to do is to turn around and see that the Lord is waiting for us.

V5: “As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.”

Ø Mark says that one angel met the women at the tomb because only one angel spoke to them.

Ø Seeing that the tomb is empty and the body of Jesus is not there the women were alarmed.

Ø They have doubted the words of Jesus about his resurrection.

· Application:

Ø We must faithfully believe and trust in the words of the Lord in the Bible.

Ø Let us always try to see the resurrected and powerful Jesus in our lives.

V6: Don’t be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.

Ø It’s easy to walk into a situation so expecting heartbreak that we fail to see the victory around us.

· Application:

Ø When faced with defeat and failure, sometimes we need to look up, realize there is more to life than the path we had planned, and have quiet faith that God will work all things together for good.

Ø Let us know well Jesus that we can recognize when He is acting in our lives.

Ø We do this by listening to His Word—the Scriptures—and believing them.
