Bible Study?

Hello dear friends,

I need some input here concerning studying the word. I was kind of planning on taking online courses (in a year or so) through a Christian college in this area. Now I'm questioning my decision - I was wondering if I should do my own Bible study. My desire is only to become closer to my Lord through His word.

In Hebrews 5: 12-14 it say: In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

I want to grow. Any inputs?

Best wishes,
Snowrose

Well I think you are off to a good start! I think anyway you choose to stay in the word be it online or self (or maybe here at talk Jesus) is good. Let the Holy Spirit lead you..

I think that it is also important to learn from teachers, after all, God gave them to us to teach us (Eph 4:11).

One of the advantages to receiving good formal education as you can learn valuable information about the historical and cultural background of the times that the Bible was written in.

For example, how many times have you heard someone say that when Jesus said "My yoke is easy and my burden is light" he was referring to the image of a yoke that held two oxen together so they could pull together? Jesus does all our pulling, so our yoke is easy when we are yoked to him?

Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi. Rabbis in Jesus' day had a yoke - it was what their interpretation and understanding of the law and what you needed to do to keep the law. Jesus was likely referring to this yoke - his new understanding and interpretation of the Law (e.g. "You have heard it said...but I say to you..."). So when Jesus said that his yoke was easy and his burden is light, he was meaning his teaching...

A good book that touches on this is Velvet Elvis...

Got to get to work...

Thank you Richard - I order the book on interlibrary loan. I'm looking forward in reading it. God Bless.
