Bibles Banned at 2008 Beijing Olympics

CBNNews.com - Organizers for the 2008 Olympics in China have released their list of items banned from the Olympic village where the athletes will stay.

Among the "prohibited objects" -- Bibles.

The Catholic News Agency reports that the committee behind the Beijing games cited "security reasons" for the ban.

Athletes are also prohibited from bearing any kind of religious symbol at Olympic facilities.

The ban seems to undermine comments released by the country's top religious affairs official. Last month, Ye Xiaowen acknowledged that he expected large numbers of religious faithful among the athletes, coaches and tourists to be swarming into the officially atheist nation during the Olympics.

Xiaowen, director-general of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, said on Oct. 17 that China plans to offer religious services for foreigners. He recognized that religion will play a positive role "in promoting economic and social development" in the future, Reuters reported.

"We are learning from practices in past Games to make sure that their demands for religious worship are met," Ye said on the sidelines of the ruling Communist Party's 17th Congress.

"Here I can promise that religious services we offer will not be lower than the level of any previous Games," Ye said. He did not say if proselytizing would be allowed.

The number of Chinese believers in Buddhism, Taosim and Christianity have been on the rise in recent years, Ye added.

Striking a Balance or Banning Religion?

But striking the balance between providing religious services for the faithful and banning personal religious materials outright may prove more difficult than safeguarding against possible security threats.

The Olympic charter says "no kind of political propaganda, religious or racial hatred is allowed in the Olympic areas."

The Spanish daily La Razon called the standard one of many "signs of censure and intolerance" towards religious objects, particularly those used by Christians in China.

There are some 10 million Catholics in China, divided between an "underground" church loyal to the Vatican and the state-approved church that respects the Pope as a spiritual figurehead but rejects effective papal control.

Currently in China, five bishops and 15 priests are in prison for opposing the state-approved church.

Other items banned from the Olympic village include video cameras and cups.

A lame excuse on their part to ban the bible for "security reasons". China has never allowed Christian believers to practice their own GOD given right to worship Him. This is just another indication of the end of times, the war raging between good and evil, GOD and Satan (who is already defeated).

I'm not surprised, but agitated by another stupid move on man's end.

Please do go to the official Olympic website and type in the word "bible" in the search box to discern if the news is a rumor or not.

As a Chinese living in Florida for 10 years, I too have a lot of mis-understanding about the policy the Chinese government holds concerning Christianity. I was filled with fear and caustions when I moved back home. Surprisingly, I see a lot more freedom than i can imagine while attending church, fellowship group and sharing gospel with friends here in China. Chinese christians have come a long way to build and reserves what we have now, and we do need prayers and encouragement to advance the kingdom of God.
Satan absolutely takes the full advantage of our languages barrier, but praise God, the TRUTH never fails!
Please do pray for all the Christian who are suffering for His glory and those non-Christians who try their best to build up un-necessary wall.

I love all of you!!!

Yunily..If the government prints the bibles, do they omit anything or is it 100% correct.
And what happens to churches who dont register with the Government, are they the ones that are "underground "
Also the churches who are registered, are they free to preach anything or do they have to abide by rules from the Government.

I always wanted to go for missions in
India and China....

I say let them do what they will, we are living epistles to be read by all men. There where no bibles for the first century christians and yet the gospel of Christ was spread magnificently.

Absolutely great point brother! This is true. No matter what man does, he can never outdo our powerful GOD, never! In the end, GOD has His way over man's foolish ways.

No matter what, a little prayer will never hurt. What Jesus said below in Scripture not only applies to faith when we pray for something we want for ourselves, but also for others, including the Father's will be done.

Luke 17:6
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

When we feel like it seems impossible for a cult, group or person to change, we should still pray for them no matter what even if we doubt a little. GOD knows our hearts, He knows we mean well. I honestly feel like the government of China will never change, but the country gains nothing good if we don't pray for it instead of sitting around doubting a possible change of heart.

Thanks for the information precious sister.

Here in England we are far from China......But we can lay claim to an Englshman, Hudson Taylor who lived just a short way from my own home here. A Yorkshireman like myself, who went to China and founded the China Inland Mission. 150 years ago

It has been said recently that 1 million people in China came to know Jesus this year?.......Hallelujah

My church is providing bibles to be distributed along the Silk Road that leads from China into Asia

God Bless you........O Lord in Jesus

Sorry for the late reply Ms Rizen 1.
Since I have only been back for a few months, I won't say that my view is absolutely right. However, for my understanding thus far, there is no missing part from the bible. As for the registered churches, preachers DO need to send their sermons for permition from the government before they preach it. I'm not familiar with the regulation on the speech, but so far I've heard topics concerning Holy spirit, praying, how to live as a Christian etc. So I don't see much restriction as for now.
And yes, any meetings with more than 10 people which did not have the government's permission is considered "illegal". But here in my city, there is one big church and lots of small churches and fellowship groups at homes. They are all considered the "branches" of the big church as far as the government concerns.
I do know that in other cities, the policy is a bit stricter than my city. Yes, Chinese christians can't enjoy as much freedom as christians in other nations; and yes, there are still people who are arrested for being a Christian. But that doesn't stop God's love. More Chinese people are being saved and treasuring the little freedom they have to worship God.
Ms Rizen1, if you're really interested in mission in China, I'll send you a contact info of an American lady who lives in China for 13 years now (I think 13 years?). Maybe she will know more about regulations for Christians here in China. I'm only experiencing an extremely small part of it so far.

I must admit that my heart sink when I first read the rumor and realized how Satan not only attack men individually but also as a whole nation. But at the same time I praise God for His grace because He has provided this place of love and understanding.

Thank you for all the wise words and prayers!! Let's keep every nations in our prayers!!!

LOVE YOU ALL!! :shade:
