BLESSING OR CURSE - You can choose
by Derek Prince

Dear everyone,

This is a wonderful Christian book.
Its an eye-opener to things that keep you from God.
Its a must read for every Christian.

Here is the first Chapter of the book :

Wrestling with Shadows
Chapter 1

To the superficial observer, human life presents a confused mingling of light and shadow, arranged according to no recognizable pattern, governed by no discernable laws. Across this scene two men may start out walking side by side. Similar in background and ability, they are headed in the same direction. Yet one walks almost always in the light of success and fulfilment. The other, close by him, scarcely sees the light. He is continually overshadowed by failure and frustration and his life is snuffed out at an untimely age. Neither of these men understands the forces at work in his life. The sources of light and shadow are hidden to them both. Probably they have never even considered the possibility that both light and shadow may have their source in previous generations.

The Bible speaks plainly about these forces. In fact, it has a great deal to say about them. It calls them respectively blessings and curses. Let us look closer, for a moment, at the man under the
shadows. He does all the right things: changes his job or place of residence; acquires further vocational skills; studies all the latest literature on positive thinking. Perhaps he even
takes a course on how to release some mysterious “potential” within himself. Yet success eludes him. His children are rebellious, his marriage under strain, accidents and illnesses routine. His
cherished goals slip through his fingers like water through the fingers of a drowning man. He is “haunted” by a sense of inevitable failure, which he can perhaps postpone, but never overcome.
All his life he has the sense of struggling against something he cannot identify—something amorphous and elusive. He feels at times as if he is wrestling with a shadow. No matter how hard he struggles, he cannot pinpoint the cause of his problem or get a grip on it. Often he feels like giving up.
“What’s the use?” he exclaims. “Nothing ever goes right for me! My father had the same problems. He was a failure, too!”

The person under the shadows could just as well be a woman, of course. She has married young and started out with all sorts of plans for a successful marriage and a happy home. She finds herself, however, on an invisible teeter-totter—“up” one day and “down” the next.

Physically, she goes from one problem to another, always on the verge of health, but never quite achieving it. Her son begins to abuse drugs and then her husband leaves her. One day she wakes up to the shocking realization that she herself has become an alcoholic. Like the man under the shadows, this woman, too, did all the right things. She studied books on nutrition and child psychology. In her pursuit of success, she goaded herself on from one effort to the next—each one demanding all the strength that she could muster. Yet she watched other women, with less motivation or qualifications, achieve the goals she herself could never attain.

As you look closer at the person under the shadows, perhaps you see something that reminds you of yourself. You feel as if you are looking at your own life—but somehow from a point outside yourself. With a shock, you begin to wonder if the cause of your problems could be the same: a curse going back to preceding generations. Or again, it may not be yourself that you see, but someone close to you—a spouse or a family member or a dear friend. You have often agonized over this person and longed for some ray of hope, but always in vain. Now you are confronted with a possible explanation of the shadows, which is a new idea to you. Could the root of the problem really be a curse?

Your mind goes back to events and situations in your life or your family that never seemed to make sense. You tried many times to dismiss them from your thoughts, but never completely succeeded. You realize that you need to know more. Suppose I am the one under a curse, you may say to yourself. What can I do? What could be its source?

A curse could also be likened to a long, evil arm stretched out from the past. It rests upon you with a dark, oppressive force that inhibits the full expression of your personality. You never feel completely free to be yourself. You sense that you have potential within you that is never fully developed. You always expect more of yourself than you are able to achieve. Or again, that long, evil arm may have the effect of tripping you up as you walk. Your way seems clear before you, but from time to time you stumble—yet you cannot see what it was you stumbled over. For some uncanny reason, the moments at which you stumble are those when you are within reach of attaining some long-sought goal. Yet your goal eludes you.

Actually, the word uncanny could be likened to a red warning light. You experience events or situations for which you can find no natural or logical reason. It seems that there is some force at work that is not completely subject to the usual laws of nature or of averages.

There is one word that sums up the effects of a curse: frustration. You reach a certain level of achievement in your life and everything looks set for a bright future. You have all the obvious qualifications—and yet something goes wrong! So you start all over again and reach the same level as before, but once again things go wrong. After this happens several times, you realize that this is the pattern of your life. Yet you cannot see any obvious reason for it. Many people have shared with me the story of a life that has a similar pattern. The individual details may differ, but the pattern is there. Often such people say something like, “The same thing always happened to my father. I feel as if I’m reliving his frustrations,” or, “I can hear my grandfather saying again and again, ‘Things never go right for me.’”

This pattern may occur in various areas of people’s lives: business, career, health or finance. Nearly always it has some kind of negative effect on personal relationships— especially marriage and family. Frequently, too, it affects not just one isolated individual, but a larger social group. Most often this would be a family, but it can extend to a wider circle, such as a community or a nation.

It would be misleading, however, to suggest that a curse always causes a person to fail. A person may achieve what appears to be real success and yet be plagued by frustration, never enjoying the fruits of success. On a ministry journey in Southeast Asia I met an intelligent, well-educated female judge, who was descended from royalty. She knew Jesus personally as Saviour and was not conscious of any unconfessed sin in her life. Yet she told me that she was not truly satisfied. Her
successful career and her high social position had not brought her personal fulfilment. As I talked with her, I discovered that she was descended from many generations of idol worshipers. I explained to her that, according to Exodus 20:3–5, God had pronounced a curse on idol worshippers down to the third and fourth generations. Then I showed her how to receive release from this curse through Jesus her Saviour.

Sometimes curses may not have their origin in previous generations. They may be the result of deeds or events in your own lifetime. Or it may be that a curse from previous generations has been compounded by things you yourself have done. Whatever the source of your problem, however, one thing is certain: You are struggling with something that you can neither identify nor understand. Like that judge, you, too, may have tasted success. You do indeed know the sweetness of it—but it never lasts! Suddenly, for no reason you can explain, you are dissatisfied. Depression settles over you like a cloud. All your achievements seem so insubstantial. You look at others who appear content in similar circumstances and you ask yourself, What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I ever experience real fulfilment?

Perhaps at this point your reaction is something like this: Some of these descriptions really fit me. Does that mean there is no hope for me? Do I have to go on like this for the rest of my life?
No, there is hope for you! Do not be discouraged. As you read on, you will discover that God has provided a remedy and you will be given simple, practical instructions on how to apply the remedy in your own life. Meanwhile, you will find encouragement in the following letters I received from two people who listened to my radio Bible teaching programme on the theme “From Curse to Blessing”. The first letter is from a man and the second from a woman.

"I listened to your messages on the curse and I found out that I had been under one for years and never knew it. I was never able to be successful in life and constantly suffered from feelings of homosexuality, though I never fuelled the feelings into action. I have been a Christian for 10 years now but because of the curse was never able to get as close to God as I wanted to. I became very depressed. Since I have been freed from this curse I have felt so free in Jesus and alive in Him. I have never felt so close to God!"

"Thank you for your recent broadcasts on curses and your booklet “From Curse to Blessing”. My life has been greatly changed by them. For most of my life I have been troubled by recurring depression and altogether for five years I have been under the care of a psychiatrist. This spring a lady prayed with me and for me and I renounced all involvement with the occult, such as tarot cards and tea leaves. Praise the Lord, the beginning of real freedom! Then I heard your broadcasts on being under a curse without really knowing it and prayed with you as you prayed the prayer of release from curses. Now I am free! It is as if a dam has broken and God can move in my spirit. The blockage is gone and I have grown so much spiritually in a few weeks that I can only praise Him for His blessing. Sometimes I weep when I think about all He has done and is doing for me and it is such a relief to be able to relax."

Truly, we worship a wonderful God!

Please beware!

Derek Prince has done false teachings and this book is full of error.

This book in itself is a snare and will bind you in fear and weakness, thinking you are under a curse all the time. Teaching that every sickness must be a curse and that being poor must be the result of a curse but that is all nonsense.

Beware!

Is it right for a Christian to be sick and poor?
The Word says, " just as He is, so are we in this world" 1 John 4:17
Is Jesus Christ sick and poor right now... in heaven ??!!!!

The question is 'was Jesus poor on earth?'

He was born in a squalid stable. He had no home (Matt 8:20). He had almost no possessions - he had to borrow a colt and a room to eat his last meal. He told his disciples to take only the essentials when they went out (Mark 6:8): "And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse". He was rejected by his friends at the end.

Of course we will all be rich in heaven. But this life is NOT about physical riches and health. If we long for them we are practising idolatry. We should long for God's presence first, and whatever comes from that - trials or wealth, sickness or health - we will be happy.

" Just as He is, so are we in this world" 1 John 4:17

Study the verse.

It doesn't say " Just as He was on the earth, so are we in the world"
BUT " Just as He IS" referring to Him being in Heaven right now, sitteth at the right hand of the Father.

Present tense....

May I conclude with this,

"He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?" Rom 8:32

God bless all

He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.
1 John 2:6

Did Jesus really care for worldly riches? Or was Jesus only concerned to do the Fathers Will?

It looks to me you are preaching another wealth-health prosperity gospel which is covertly being promoted by those Derek Prince's teachings.

Isaiah 53 please mind you,

Take care.

Dear DutchChristian,

No, I'm not preaching another prosperity gospel, but the one I heard from the beginning.
Ofcourse, Jesus did the Father's Will and because of that He is glorified with the glory which He had with the Father before the world was.
And through Him, we are glorified together when He was raised from the dead.
So now, does the Glory of God correspond to sickness, poverty, lack, tragedies...?

Psalm 35:27 says:
" Let the Lord be magnified who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant."

Prosperity is God's desire for you. Prosperity is more than just having wordly riches or money. That's part of that. It means to have total soundness and well being in every area of your life! Rest and Peace and so much more.
So how can you deny all that, when Christ came to die, be buried and to be raised from the dead to give you all that in Him?

"Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you" Matt 6:33

Till now, you have been talking about how Jesus didn't care about worldly riches, but what about sickness?
Would you please give me an account where it says in the Bible that Jesus was sick and He rested for 7 days...or something like that ?

God bless you

God MAY give health, wealth and all these material things. But he may not. It is very easy to go from wanting God's PRESENCE first and foremost, to wanting his BLESSINGS first and foremost. And then from there to believing that we have to earn these blessings....

All through the Bible we see people who are afflicted, from Job - God rebukes his friends who claim that he is afflicted because he is under a curse - to Paul, who talked about his 'thorn in the flesh'. God says to Job in essence, 'I have no answers for you for your sufferings, but look at ME and my work and my love for you. And be content'.

Jesus himself spoke out against this way of thinking, "Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?". (Luke 13:4)

Paul says, "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. 11 For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. (1 Cor 4: 8-11)

Does this sound like someone who God has given health etc? Or someone who is in love with God and is willing to accept his 'cross' in whatever form.

There is a very good book by Larry Crabb called "The Pressure's Off" - I recommend it.

I'm not saying God doesn't bless, heal etc in his great love for us. I'm saying we shouldn't EXPECT it of God. If we do we are turning God into nothing more than a divine cash machine. Like a child who when their father comes home from work every day asks straight away 'have you got anything for me?'

Let me ask this question again :

Would you please give me an account where it says in the Bible that Jesus was sick and He rested for 7 days...or something like that ?
I would like you to answer this question since poverty and sickness go to the same destination - Death.

There is nothing God withholds from His children, He doesn't keep anything FROM us but FOR us.

Eph 1:3 says " Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ..."
When you grow in spiritual blessings, materials blessings are also added to you.
So there is nothing like " God MAY bless us with so and so..." He has done it already. We are just ignorant. There is nothing wrong is expecting something from God by faith.

When the child grows and becomes a mature son, that son doesn't now keep asking the father to get him things... He is supposed to be independant, knowing things and is the next heir of the father's possessions. So we need to grow up spiritually.

Luke 15:31 says " My son, ..... all that I have is yours..." We are joint-heirs with Christ, the Word declares.

3 John 1:2 says " Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
This links up to what I explained from Eph 1:3 above.

How else will we be the light of the world if God would keep us in sickness and poverty????!!
Its either God is not sure about what He's doing or its us who do not understand Him.
He is perfect. The problem lies with us, not Him.
In all your getting, get understanding! Prov 4:7

Concerning Job and Paul:

The Lord restored double of everything Job had in the end. He got His health and wealth back.
Likewise Paul. He did go through severe trials and was hit by rods on his back. But if the Lord wasn't restoring his health back, Paul would have been dead in the first blow.

God bless you

Let me ask this question again :How else will we be the light of the world if God would keep us in sickness and poverty????!!

OK, here is an example of how we can be the light of the world in sickness. My colleague's wife has been ill with terminal cancer for nearly 2 years. Her love of Jesus and her joy through this has seen her children's faith grow, and many around her. She has not been healed. Would you tell her that, "The problem lies with you, not Him"?

poverty and sickness go to the same destination - Death.

We all face physical death - God will not deliver us from that! But it is our SPIRITUAL life that will go on for ever. That is where our focus should be. And it is the same for what we seek from God. Again, we should seek his 'presence' not his 'presents' (that's not mine btw!)

Again, I'm not saying that God doesn't give good things to his children. both material and spiritual. Rather that sometimes we lack the maturity to know what is good for us. But he is a good Father who does know. Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." There is a warning right there.

When you grow in spiritual blessings, material blessings are also added to you.

Please show me where this is in the Bible.

About Jesus being ill; we can speculate about this. Maybe he was but it was not reported. Maybe God kept him in good health because the time of his ministry was so short. But it is shaky theological ground to declare doctrine from what the Bible doesn't say about something.

Peace be with you.

May I make something very clear here:

Poverty, sickness, lack etc... does not lie in the physical first, but in the mind of a man.
Man becomes poverty-minded and failure-minded.
Poverty and sickness hail from Sin and Death. That's why Jesus took sin and death upon Himself on the cross so that you may be without sin and be in health and be rich when we were raised together with Christ from the dead.

That's why the Word of God says in Rom 12:2 :

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
You said " Rather that sometimes we lack the maturity to know what is good for us"
that's why God is telling you t renew your mind so that you may mature and know what is good for you according to His will for you.

3 John 1:2 says " Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

God, in the above verse says that you prosper in ALL things and be in health. The most important is this : JUST AS YOUR SOUL PROSPERS.

Is your soul prospering in the things of God? ( then your mind is being renewed) Are you doing the perfect will of God for your life?
This will determine how much your prospering in ALL things - not SOME things.

The Word of God is clear concerning prosperity. People are lacking the revelation of it.

The evidence of what I said : "When you grow in spiritual blessings, material blessings are also added to you."
is written in Matt 6:33

" Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and ALL these things shall be added to you"
If you read the entire chapter 6, you will find that Jesus is talking about material wealth.

As I have mentioned above that sickness hail from sin and death. So if Jesus 'was sick' in the accounts of the bible then that means you are saying that Jesus was a sinner.
"....but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin." Heb 4:15

God bless you

As with all things, there are extreems. Take the life of Paul. Here was a guy who had great spiritual blessings, and most would say his soul prospered.

What then did he deal with while spreading the gospel and minding the things of the Kingdom of God?

1Co 4:10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.
1Co 4:11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;
1Co 4:12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:
1Co 4:13 Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.
1Co 4:14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.

The sign of a soul prospering is not material wealth, abundance, or mammon prosperity. It is the simple trust in the Lord that He will give what is needed
when it is needed. If the blessings of wealth come to a person be sure that He has a reason for it.

Now, a nation that has broken covenant with God will not last long. He does prosper a nation who holds to His commandments. There are laws that can
govern the nation that can lead to oppression and lack, but this is different than the saint who walks with the Lord and is poor.

The key here, is Who is being served. What is being trusted no matter what financial, or physical state. Is it God, or is it mammon.

Satan may come to buffet, and deliverence prayers for oppression are wise. But then, after the prayers are said, the results are left to the Lord, no matter
what the outcome is.

Its true that Paul was rich spiritually and that is how it ought to be.
We as Christians who want to live godly in this evil age will suffer persecution for Christ sake just like Paul whether we have wealth or not at the time. But that does not make having material wealth wrong.
It will be wrong and sinful when we make that wealth our "god" and that's where self-control comes in. Yes and at times, we have to say "No" to wealth so that we keep our focus on the Lord. But in general and in core, Its God's desire for you to be prospering in all things. He is LOVE and Love always builds up.

Just because you suffer as a Christian doesn't mean you have to remain poor and sick!
Its impossible for poverty and sickness to remain when you have been raised together with Christ from the dead!

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich" 2Cor 8:9

Rich spiritually first and then rich in material wealth.

" If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasures" Job 36:11

" Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask and you will receive, that your joy may be full" John 16:24

God bless you

Ok, let's look at this with some practicality.

King David was wealthy, so was Solomon. They were going to build the temple that the Lord had ordained.

Jesus was poor in the sense of mammon. As someone already posted, he had no where to lay his head. And he had to get the tax out of the mouth of a fish.
Did he lack the faith? Did he lack prosperity of the soul.

Mar 12:16 And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.
Mar 12:17 And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

Lets talk modern day. Talk the prosperity doctrine to those saints who are in underground churches in the 3rd world countries thriving in the real prosperity of God, and
tell them all they have to do is have enough faith, and believe for riches, health, wealth and prosperity, and they will have it when they have seen countless of their own
bethren die at the hand of men and plagues. All because those who lead their country and other countries hold the purse strings.

Who is richer in the Kingdom of God. Those who plow, water, and harvest for the souls of men unto God, or those who own countless jewels, and are at the very peak of
health. Seems the currency of God's Kingdom is different than the currency of the kingdom of Satan.

I agree there exists people whose lot in life seems to be, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any at all". While God does wish prosperity for his children, his children must be prepared that any material gain can be lost in a heartbeat. More accurately, is being a disciple of Christ a curse or a blessing?

I appreciate that many here will rally to the cause of the latter, and justifiably so. But, "be ye not conformed to the World..." is a significant warning. What works for you can also work against you. Accumulate enough toys and you will find that you have very little free time. Those same toys can also be a significant distraction. The only sense of wealth that a Christian truly has is peace of mind knowing that our Heavenly Father is still in charge, and he will not forsake those who truly cherish his love and ways. In a broader sense, our walk with God is not about us; it's about how we interact with the other boys and girls on the playground. It's about having a faith that can be proved by good works as guided by our Father. It's about knowing that you have done everything right to the best of your ability, including the safety and welfare of others. And, some will resent you for it to the point where thoughts become actions. If you treat people with dignity and integrity, their hostility is not directed toward you, but against the Father. Trust me, their hostility can leave a mark. To reiterate, the only wealth you may have at that point is the peace of mind knowing that God is still in charge. And, possessing a sound mind is a treasure that is worth having when all else is lost.

" Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask and you will receive, that your joy may be full" John 16:24

Sadly, many people have taken Jn 16:24 to be carte blanche permission to order whatever they want from God's "menu" and presume that they should receive it.

"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction." (1 Tim 6:9)
