I would like to purchase one or two books to help me study the bible more seriously and would be grateful for any recommendations.

I currently just have a concordance which I find helpful - and I also have a commentary but admit that I rarely use it - sometimes it hasn't seemed that clear.

Thanks for your suggestions :)

thanks Brighthouse - i will look and see if its on Amazon so i can look at a copy :)

i find a topical bible is a great help. i am using the john macarthur copy, one book i use alot is a webster dicionary.

Just to update - I've come across Thru The Bible commentaries by Vernon McGee - so I've ordered a set - they have very good reviews.

There is also a radio broadcast online of expositional bible teaching by Vernon McGee which I am going to try listening to - its free and matches up with the commentaries. The teaching is on a cyclical 5 year plan - you can start at any point during the cycle - and past radio broadcasts are archived online for listening to too. I have really felt that I need to listen to sound expositional teaching - a lot of teaching or sermons may be good but seem to be on themes.

Just a thought---Before you order all that---Maybe listen to a few of his radio broadcasts to get a feel of his manner of teaching---In my opinion he is very easy to listen to but some might disagree?

Happy

Hi Happy, thanks but I'm afraid I've ordered them already - perhaps i was too impulsive - I will have to send them back if they aren't suitable. Although I did start reading one and thought it looked helpful.

Actually I'm just about to listen to one of his radio broadcasts now - here's hoping ...

(Out of curiosity - what have you found most helpful in your bible studies?)

That's hard to answer---As a younger Christian I tried to use commentaries but found they confused me more as they seemed to disagree with one another so readily---Vernon Magee is fine--He is a staunch fundamentalist and teaches from that perspective---So be careful when you come to where he teaches about speaking in tongues and the gifts of the spirit etc---Just go and look up those verses for yourself and if you have further questions, just post up on here----I think the best advice I can give would be to encourage you not to be stumbled by the things you read and don't understand or disagree with---Just underline them in red ink and keep reading forward in faith---As time goes on the scripture itself will reveal to you many of those areas you underlined in red---The Bible is probably the best commentator of the scriptures itself.

the Bible is a good start
a few different versions is also worth using, if possible
and best of all to begin with, a knowing and being known relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ Himself by the blessed and most holy comforter and teacher, the Holy Ghost, our friend and pledge, our betrothal seal and helper and an inheritance and prodigal renewed, revived, and restored, redeemed bond with our Father which art in Heaven
Hallowed Be His Name

Take Heed and be very careful with Bible commentarie's as we have but One Teacher!

Man makes mistakes and false interpretation a lot of times, read The Word of GOD by yourself alone! and pray seek GOD and be a doer of the Word.

Remember:

John 8:
31 Then Said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.

We need to be faithful and follow Him!

Mark 12:30-31 !

Now don't forget now: Jeremiah 17:5-8!

As many many are deceived into believing a false "gospel", which is any (an)other gospel then The REAL Gospel of taking up our cross daily deny ourselves and follow Him.

And so there is many false other so called "gospels" out there for instance, you got the: "health wealth get rich quick or you are not blessed" type of false gospel, word of faith movement, "you can be a friend of the world" false type of gospel, new age false type of gospel etc... This is not the same Jesus!!! Let us take heed not to be deceived by the many commentarie's etc.

Take a good King James Holy Bible (KJV) without the commentarie's and pray and follow and do what The Words says and you will be Blessed! And your understanding will grow!

(i believe you can also use a Strongs concordance at times to look up the meaning of certain words via the King James Version, i do that sometimes, i can recommend it for better understanding some times but the best thing is prayer and just reading the Bible TOGETHER with following actually what The Word of God says for us to do!)

And sometimes i use the Amplified Bible (AMP) version and the Dutch Statenvertaling (SV) too (old Bible version of my native tongue). But commentarie's i almost do not use as it is just someone else's interpretation of someone and their personal viewpoint some are good though at times and then fail in other area's in the Scriptures and some are not good but plain ERROR so use discernment! But rather do not use commentarie's at all! and beware that most tend to calvinism and OSAS which is not the Truth nor True Doctrine. Be careful!

Let not someone else do the work for you we need to grow in Grace ourselves by studying the Scriptures, O LORD Help us to be more like the Bereans!

Hallelujah! The Word of God ! Hallelujah!

Luke 4:
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God.

Psalm 119:
105 Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Do not make flesh your arm but instead make The Living GOD your only Trust and Refuge!

Amen & amen

Strong's Concordance

A book to help.

If you have a Concordance the VINES EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT WORDS fits in nicely to get the meaning of the words from the Greek.

I do have a question, has anyone every showed how many tools are in the Concordance? Most people just use it to look for where words are used in certian verses. But there is so very much more in a Concordance that just that. What kind of Concordance did you get? There are many kinds of Concordances; there are Concordance's for the different versions of the Bible like one for the KJV, NKJV, RSV, NRSV, NIV, ASV, NASB, and even some more, It is best to have a concordance in the version of the Bible you use most. Talk Jesus in the "BOOKS" at the top, has a connection to CBD and it's a online book store, You can call them and ask for help, and their book's are reasonable priced as well. Or you may want to go to your local Christian book store. If you have a Christian College or Seminary near you these are places you can get very good materials as well, and they might be better equipped to help you as they tend to be more experienced in Bible Helps. Blessings.
