Hello,

I have a question about the devil and how he influences your thoughts. In the Alpha course I've learned ( from the dvd of Nicky Gumbel ) that the devil can make you think negative things like put doubt in your mind.

I don't know if I can put it this way, but does the devil like negative thoughts ? Also about yourself ? I always had some problems with my self-esteem. Before I was a Christian I just sometimes felt very bad about myself.
But now I'm a Christian, I generaly feel happier with myself, and it seems that somebody likes it when I think negative things about myself and tries to make it worser. That's how it feels to me. For example:
I was looking for a job on the internet and couldn't find anything. I thought : there is no job for me. Then I thought : you're good for nothing, you don't have the right education, you did the wrong study, why did you study at all ?
More in the "you" form, like somebody was trying to make me feel bad, accusing me of making the wrong choices and enjoying it, because he was succeeding. I felt terrible.
I immediatly turned off the internet, stopping those thoughts.

It's hard to explain and I hope I don't sound silly, but I just had the idea it could be the devil making my bad feelings worse ?
But I don't know much about the devil yet, so I'm not sure.

Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

You cannot keep a bird form landing on your head but you can sure keep it from building a nest. Not every thought is ours but the choice of whether we will dwell on it and/or entertain it is.

God's Word says we are healed, we are free,we are loved, we are conquerors and much, much more. If thoughts contrary to this come along recognize them for what they are and discard them accordingly.

2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

I need to tell another short story, in my life.

After being abandoned at 13 years of age, then sent back into a bad situation I was trying to escape from, which ended in rape, and a marriage I didn't want.....I had some very poor feelings about myself also.
God loved me so much he confronted me with the truth of his love, while I was in Germany, and drew me back into relationship with him.
But, like you, I still had turmoil going on in my mind.
Why did God allow all this to happen to me etc. etc. I couldn't seem to get my mind settled on the fact he loved me, but kept trying to figure out the whys, and wherefores.

Then one day I was driving along the road, listening to a sermon on the radio, still fighting these disconcerting thoughts at the same time, when all of a sudden I heard a loud cry over what seemed like the Radio!
"Look to Jesus!"
The voice just whaled in a pitiful cry!
So much so, it shocked me, and I looked down at the radio, and the sermon was going on in its monotone voice as normal.
I realized then it was a cry from Gods own heart, and he used the radio to cry out to me. "Look to Jesus!"
I let the past remain in the past. It cant be undone, but God holds my future, and I know the plans he has for me. Plans to help, and not harm, plans to give me a hope, and a future.
I look forward now to the promises of God, and we have a glorious future ahead of us, as he promised , and we can count on our future, in Him. Look, then, To Jesus! The author, and finisher of our faith. amen, and amen

Yes he can make you think negatively, but he needs good soil to plant his seeds. Meaning he knows our weaknesses, and the one weakness Christians have is the lack of knowledge of who they are in Christ.

If we have an identity disorder and tend to live in the past that's good soil. The fruits of the devil are unforgiveness, low self esteem, bitterness, depression , anger and sadness etc. Because of our lack of identity it's easier for us to identify ourselves with the labels that reflect how we feel instead of who we are in Christ.

I use to visit Donnie Mcclurkin's church and he said something that I carry with me everyday..

THE DEVIL CAN NOT TAKE WHAT HE DID NOT GIVE YOU.

If the joy of the Lord is our strength, if our help comes from the Lord, if there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, if God has the power to renew a right spirit within us and create in us a clean heart, if we are a royal priesthood, if I have been given the mind of CHRIST( 1 Cor. 2:16 ), If I have been established, anointed and sealed by GOD in CHRIST, and I have been given the HOLY SPIRIT as a pledge guaranteeing my inheritance to come.( 2 Cor. 1:21 Ephes. 1: 13, 14 ) and I don't know it as the truth.

Yes the devil can put negative thoughts in my head

But he can not take what he did not give, meaning God gave me peace and joy, and the devil has no right to take it, but if I give up my authority then I'm stuck in bondage, because I don't know who I am in Christ.

Hello!

What the devil wants is that we give up.
What the devil wants is that we give up entirely and that we abandon faith in God and the idea that what we are made in God's image for a purpose and a reason. The devil will look for a way that will make us negative.

What God wants from us is not that we be perfect but that we must strive to be that way. So we must give our best everyday and make God happy.

When we stumble and fall so God helps us backs to our feet when we fall and call out for help. Over and over again - until we finally are strong enough to go onto the next lesson and ready to face any temptations.

The Devil will often put thoughts in the first-person singular so we think they're our own. He is called the "Accuser" for a reason! He is also a "Liar."

"Do your thoughts make you feel...

  • Sad, depressed, lonely or hopeless
  • Unclean or sickened
  • Angry, bitter, unforgiving
  • Self-hatred, self-doubt
  • Feelings of anxiety or fear
  • Anything other than peace and well being

Are you...

  • Constantly rehearsing negative memories
  • Dominated by blatant sexual images?

"Tormenting thoughts that we do not choose to think come from Satan, the enemy of our soul. He puts those thoughts there and we accept them as ours. So we feel guilty about them. This is mental oppression, a ploy of the devil. When he starts to bring to bring up things like that you have to tell him to leave you alone. If you resist the thoughts, they’ll eventually leave. ...Say outloud: 'I will not be controlled by negative thoughts. I renounce these thoughts in the name of Jesus. God has not given me a spirit of fear [2 Timothy 1:7]. I have the mind of Christ and I refuse any thoughts that are not of Him.” (Stormie Omartian)

"Scripture clearly teaches that Satan is capable of putting thoughts into our minds. ...These deceptive thought come first person singular in such a way that we think they're our own thoughts." (Neil Anderson)

"The Devil throws hidous thoughts into the soul--hatred of God, blasphemy, and despair. ...Sometimes he produces such as to make me doubt whether or not there is a God." (Martin Luther)

"The enemy's chief target is the mind because the most effective way to influence behavior is to influence thinking." (Bethe Moore)

"'Voices' in the mind are not uncommon: blaphemous mockeries, spurts of temptation to wallow in vile fantasy or behavior, pursuasive lines of belief. Classic spiritual warfare inteprets these as coming from the evil one." (David Powlison)

"I have counseled hundreds of believers who are struggling with their thought life. Some have difficulty concentrating and reading their Bible, while others actually hear 'voices' or struggle with accusing or condemning thoughts. With few exceptions these struggles have proven to be a spiritual battle for their mind. This shouldn't surprise us since we have been warned in 1 Timothy 4:1: 'The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.'

"...Many people will assume the are mentally ill...Are they mentally ill or is there a battle going on for their mind?...Psychiatrits and psychologists routinely see patients who are hearing voices: chemical imbalance is the standard diagnosis. I believe our body chemistry can get out of balance and cause discomfort and hormonal problems can throw our systems off. But I also believe there are other legitimate questions to be asked, such as, 'How can a chemical produce a personal thought?' and 'How can our neurotransmitters involuntarily and randomly fire in such a way that they create thoughts that we are opposed to thinking?' Is there a natural explanation? ...I don't think we will have a comprehensive answer unless we take into account the reality of the spiritual world.

"...Much of what is being passed off today as mental illness is nothing more than a battle for our minds."

(Neil Anderson)

"This [superficial] wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual [animal], even devilish."

"Our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers...authorities...world powers of darkness...spiritual forces of evil in the heavens." (Ephesians 6:12)

"Satan offers wrong thinking to everyone, but we do not have to accept his offer." (Joyce Meyer)

"We are in a war. ...Our warfare is not with other human beings but with the devil and his demons (Ephesians 6:12).The primary battlefield is the mind. The goal of our warfare...is to steal back our thought life and take it captive to Christ instead. ...The weapon is the Word [of God]." (Joyce Meyer)

"Jesus tells us how we are to win the victory over the lies of Satan. We must get the knowledge of God's truth in us, renew our minds with His Word, then use the weapons of 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 to tear down stronghold's and every high and lofty thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.” (Joyce Meyer)

"We take our thoughts captive, making them obedient to Christ, every time we choose to think Christ's thoughts about any situation or strongholdinstead of Satan's or our own. What are Christ' thoughts? The Word of God revealed to us. ...We must know the Word of God well enough to be able to compare what is in our mind with what is in the mind of God; any thought that attempts to exalt itself above the Word of God we are to cast down and bring into captivity to Jesus Christ" (Bethe Moore)

"Whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them]." (Philippians 4:8)

"The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (Jesus, John 10:10)

“If you continue in My Word, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (Jesus, John 8:31-32)

Sister Mirjam Since I served him for 22 years before Jesus saved me, I can sure tell you about him!! The devil has two side to him, both are very bad! On one side of the coin is is a thief! ( John 10:10) He looks to always rob us of our peace in every situation! As well as our love and our joy, anything that is good!! Hence why Jesus says to always think upon these things!!( Phil 4:8) For in these things sister the devil cannot be found in! Now his other side.( John 8:44) after he looks to steal from us, he lies about how it was taken!!

It was others fault you lost your joy,it was because someone came and made a bad situation worse,if this does not depress you, then he blames it all upon you!! To condemn you! This is his nature sis! It is all your fault, then he lies about how you should feel about it!! He lives in emotions and feeling sis!! this is his realm! It is why good sister that the weapons of our warfare, and make no mistake it is brutal warfare, lies in the weapons Jesus has given us!! HIS WORD!! And only his word! Our words don't cut it against the enemy! (2 Cor 10:4!!!!!-7)

The destruction of those fortresses are the fortresses of feeling and emotion! I don't feel like Jesus is around when I pray. That is not the Lord telling your mind that sis! He looks to rob you of prayer then lie about how it was took!! See what I mean?? But also remember this!! Not everything bad is of the devil either!! Let us not give him to much credit either!! Our own flesh can do a lot of speaking as well!!Look here of what is of the flesh!( Gal 5:19-21!!) From all these things of the flesh sister we can give the devil an opportunity in our lives!( eph 4:27)

It is why sister we strongly discipline our sorry flesh!( 1 cor 9:23-27!!) All sin begins in the very same place for all of us sister!!We must think upon sin, for it to give birth to actual sin! Hence why we must be set in our minds upon our Jesus!!And his Word!!( Colossians 3:2-4) For if the words of Christ dwell in our minds then our faith takes action against those who would bring the enemy to our doorstep!

If a mailman came to your doorstep with a basket with holes on the side of it,and snakes were coming through those holes would you sign for the package?? LOL Of course you would not,but many do and have sis!We have seen them signing there life away! I spoke on this in another part of the forum sis but will show you a perfect example! ( matt 3:17) God called Jesus his beloved, as we his children are sis!! If you believe this, then we have no fear and no doubt!!WHY?? because 1 john 4:17says as He IS!! SO!!! ARE WE!!! In this world! Then verse 18-19

Now with this in mind, watch what the devil tempts Jesus with sis!!Matt 4:3 notice something odd sis? LOL The devil did not say the word beloved to Jesus,he stole it out of there!! LOL And what did Jesus say?? The same thing we are to say!! IT IS WRITTEN!!! Jesus spoke this from deut 8:3) Now the enemy does not give up so easy, so again he tempted Jesus by leaving out certain words in matt 4:6 the devil left out the words spoken in psalms 91:11-12 he left out To guard you in all your ways!! LOL

It was not because the devil did not know those words either sis!! LOL Our Jesus ever knowing!! said IT IS WRITTEN!!!! verse 7 quoting from the Word himself sis!! ( deut 6:16!!)Since the devil found out he could not steal from Jesus his Godhead,he looked to lie to him about it by saying.verse 8-9 another words just make me king and all those things Adam gave me with his own unbelief, i will give back to you! LOL Jesus said It is written!! GO Satan!!! Jesus then quoted both deut 6:13 and 10:20!The devil then fled, meaning he ran away!! Not walked away! And what happened after that?? psalm 91:11-12 Angels came to minister to our Jesus! BAM!!

Does it matter if I remember scriptures? Does it matter your result?? LOL YOU BET!! The Word matters to us sis!!(Psalm 138:2) Jesus said it is right up there with my own name! And I have sure found that since his own word is good enough for Jesus, it sure is good enough for me! Many of the brothers and sister here have kicked the devil right in his teeth many time!! So often in fact he does not come back!! LOL Because if he ever were to, he would get the WORD! Jesus cannot be defeated! In fact Jesus has called us conquers!!

Because we his children speak and believe his most wonderful name and Word!( rom 8:35-37) We move FROM Victory sis, not to it! LOL So if you wish for your life to become much brighter, and much more peaceful, stay, I mean stay in his Word daily sis!! For from the very Word of God himself sister comes 1 cor 1:30-31!! verse 30 but by HIS doing!! And from what our Jesus did for us!! We have some wonderful results!! amen! may this encourage you to stay in the Word of Life for our own sakes!

  • By nature, the devil is the total opposite of God.
  • All Good Things Come From God (Psalm 127). Nothing good comes from the devil.
  • James 1: 17 All good gifts come from God. The devil has no good gifts to give.
  • We are naturally sinners and negativety is certainly one of those sins but not unlike other sins that many of us do not readily relate too like, doubt and worry.
  • Look at it like this, sin and the devil is anything that God is not.
  • I am not sure that he can make you negative, we are pretty good at that on our own but satin can certainly encourage you pehaphs. He doesn't make you sin but he certainly loves it when you do. Remember God hates sin, the devil loves sin!
