Christian Character:

My purpose today is to describe the character of Christians. But before we can consider a Christian’s character let us describe and define who is a Christian?

Nelson’s Bible dictionary says a Christian is an adherent follower of Christ, an ADHERENT follower of Christ. It also tells us that the word Christian occurs three times in the New Testament.

The first is in Acts 11:26
The second in Acts 26:28
The Third in 1 Peter 4:16

This designation as Christian was initiated by the non-Christian population of Antioch, prior to this we are told by historians Christians called themselves “believers” as in Acts 5:14, “brethren of brothers” Acts 6:3 or “Saints” Acts 9:13 or Romans 1:7, 1 Cor 1:2, Phill 1:1

Acts 11:26

26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch
KJV

Acts 26:28

28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.
KJV

1 Peter 4:16

16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
KJV

Acts 5:14

14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
KJV

Acts 6:3

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
KJV

Acts 9:13

13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
Rom 1:7

7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
KJV

1 Cor 1:2

2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
KJV

Phil 1:1
1:1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

I shall stop reviewing the list of character traits here, because I want to return to this subject in another sermon and because I think that you, like me, got to this point and quietly said to yourself, “How am I going to accomplish all this?”

This is the place where I get to say, “In ourselves, in our flesh, we will never accomplish those character traits! But we do not have to my brothers and sisters. If we are saved and when we are saved, we receive Christ into our hearts and we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. From that moment on as long as we are in Christ and Christ is in us and we surrender control to Him, we are a new creature endowed with the mind and spirit of Christ who will accomplish all things through us, if only we will let Him.

So, my friends starting today or continuing today whichever may be the case with you, die to yourself, surrender to Christ and the Holy Spirit and all things are possible. All THINGS.

In my preparation for this message I found the following things that describe us as saved Christians, and who we are in Christ. God, thru Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit has provided us with all we need. Let me review for you what we are, who we are or have become, and the blessings that are ours as a part of His flock.
