I like metal, but for a different reason. For me it is only good if it is so heavy that by about the 4th or 5th track the skin is coming off my face :) It needs to be so heavy that it stops most my brain function, mainly because I use it as an escape .

My life was metal before Christ, but I have had to take a LOT of it out. Many "Christian" metal bands are pretend Christian or are decieved that is for certain. I used to read the band interviews a lot, and I assure you some Christian metal bands are absolutly not christian. I don't think is anything bad about "heavy" music, but the lyrical content is definitly to be considered. So I would just add my .02 and say that you should be careful about the bands you listen to.

For instance, I know that Norma Jean supports openly the band Slayer, and as you well know Slayer is very "non-christian" although the band claims neutrality, and the vocalist is "catholic", with songs like "God hates us all" they obviously are not. So be careful of supporting bands that openly support such obviously evil metal. On the other hand, as far as I know "As I Lay Dying" is a pretty Christian band, they don't drink, they don't smoke, and they openly support Christians. I am sure that if some Christians heard them they would attribute their sound to Satan, but I think it is merely a difference in culture and time.

It is a tough issue, and personally I recommend that you do your research before supporting any band that assosiates themselves with metal, as metal does often assosiate itself with very evil lifestyles. Metal can have a place in a Christians life as long as the listening Christians are careful.

Touche my fellow brother, As I Lay Dying is pretty good. But my favorite christian band is sinai beach. But as you said, i use it as an escape also. As weird as it my sound, i use music to connect to God, Metal and others alike. But metal helps clear my mind and help vent my emotions since being a christian can be very difficult and stress-full.

It certainly is stressful being a Christian, and metal can definitely help :) When I first came to Christ I was listening to like a lot of really... not good metal, like death and black metal, but I feel like cutting out the Christian and other Metal I like cut out more than I could handle, and it was like I severed part of my self.

I haven't heard much of Sinai Beach, but I did have a single of theirs on a comp I listened to a bunch. I should check them out further. I remember they had a pretty raw sound that wasn't very cleaned up via studio effects which is always awesome IMHO. Anyway, it is good to hear from a brother who also enjoys some good heavy music.

well, i don't listen to metal at all... maybe it's in my culture, but i think there are beter kinds of music that display God's character.

i like quiet enviroments and when it comes to simply escaping from this world, i read my Bible, or listen to a calm chrsitian song...

Also touche, but when we listen to metal its not "displaying God's character" as you have put it. Nor does any other music display his character that i have seen. I just know how metal makes me feel when im in the dumps. But i also listen to many other types of music. These are the kinds when im in a good mood. I connect to God through all types of music but you can only listen to certain kinds in certain types of moods. But please PM me some time and share some bands with me. I bet theres a bunch you listen to i dont know and would probaly enjoy:shade: Thanks and toodles

I'm glad not everyone likes metal, and not everyone likes whatever other kind of music. God makes us different for many reasons. Variety is a gift from God and I am thankful for it. Variety among opinions and variety of choice. :)

I appreciate music of all kinds. I am a musician. I see, appreciate, expression as the musician interprets the music. There is a place I am sure for all kinds of music and for the expression of such by those who enjoy.

However I make a distinction, a difference of such musical expression as we worship Jesus within the Church. As we meet to worship the Master such ego, such macho expression is completely out of place. We have to draw near humbly, reverently, remembering that ....."He alone is worthy" ....... "He knew no sin, yet became sin for us"............We are contemplating such a miracle of mercy towards each of us, there is no room whatsoever for any expression other than sincere and humble thanksgiving.

Musicians need to remember this. The church may move on to praise, and rejoicing in God, and the gladness we feel may be expressed in the music. But those who play the instruments need to have a keen ear if discernment as to the leadings of His Holy Spirit.

my friend just had me listen to a song called "Whispers in the Dark" by a band named "Skillet"... i thought it was gunna be a dark song but the lyrics are good and the music is good too. check it out. they have it on myspace i think.
