Cold porridge slices

I once tried a slice of cold porridge with a little bit of butter, and it was absolutely delicious! So nourishing, and just a fraction of the cost of a bar of chocolate. When I mentioned it to my daughter she turned green - stupid girl doesn't know what's good for her!

The thing is, how do you make it? We all know how to make porridge, but how do I make it so it is thick enough to set when it gets cold. Do I used milk and water as per norm, or do I use water only (with a pinch of salt). Would half of the amount of water/milk achieve the desired effect, and how long would it stay fresh? With the winter months already here, I would dearly love to eat something nourishing mid-morning rather than waste money on junk food. I believe it was the staple diet of most working class kids (and their fathers) up North during the 30's when money was scarse - still is!

HAHA, shes in good company!

I love this idea, i`m going to try it, since i`m already an expert at making *thick* porridge haha :embarasse I`ve never tried porridge with butter, but I can remember my parents eating it that way.

I boil a cup of water, and add 1/2 cup of minute*oats, and stir and let cool covered, completely cold it would be thick enough to slice for sure. Maybe pouring it into a small loaf pan to cool would make it more square for slicing. :shade:

I also sometimes add chopped dates to oatmeal, or honey and cinnamon while its cooling, its very yummy and nutritious!

I Googled porridge...lots of info here...but still not sure about how long it would stay fresh, there never seems to be leftovers in my house lol
