As stated in a song titled commitment, singer Leanne Rimes states “commitment someone who’ll go the distance, someone who’s standing power will make me go weak in the knees, commitment and everything that goes with it. I need honor and love in my life from somebody who’s playing for keeps”.
What exactly is commitment and what does go along with it? Let’s take a look the meaning of this word as stated by Webster himself.
Commitment: a promise to do or give something, promise to be loyal to someone or something, the attitude of someone who works hard to support or do something. This word also means promise, devotion, to pledge devotion to somebody or something.
Now let’s look at what it means to be committed to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. To fully understand we need to look to Jesus and His commitment to our Father God in heaven. Looking in the book of Luke in chapter twenty three we see Jesus on the cross and He is dying and His last words were ones of complete trust in His Father God in Heaven. What He said was “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Throughout His ministry we saw how committed to God He was and that included the fact that in obedience and love He would go and lay down His life that many others could and would be saved. Not once did Jesus back down or run or even pray for His own will. Let’s look at the book of Luke chapter twenty-two in verses forty-one and forty-two when He is kneeling in the garden and knowing what lay ahead and being in such agony His sweat fell as great drops of blood. Here He was knowing that He was going to be tortured and put to death yet this is what He prayed “And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours be done” Did you see that? Being scared and in great agony He still prayed that God’s will be done and not His” Talk about commitment to God the Father…always putting Himself last and doing that which God the Father willed.
What was that? Yep you saw right He put God The Father ahead of Himself , in all He said and all He did…commitment is dying to self and putting God and His will ahead of our own selfish wants and needs in every aspect of our lives Just as Jesus did when He walked this earth. When we pray our prayers should be just as Jesus prayer was that God’s will be done and not our own. We should conduct ourselves as Jesus did when He walked this earth. He went about doing the will of the Father God who sent Him. What was that will you ask? Yes He healed the sick and the blind, He preached and taught God’s word, He raised people from the dead and in doing all of these things He did them with LOVE….above all He loved and showed Love to others.
Jesus showed Love to us in the fact that He laid down His very life for us. It is by His grace, mercy and Love we are now forgiven, saved and written in His lamb’s book of life. While here on earth we are called to be committed to Him and that means putting Him ahead of what we want, how we feel or don’t feel, what we think or don’t think. We are called to be examples of Him while we are alive and to love others as He loved and loves us.
In the song I mentioned above the singer states she wants someone whose stay power will make her weak in the knees. Let me do one better because when we commit our lives and every aspect of it to God our Father…we aren’t just made weak in the knees we are brought to our knees in praise and worship of the very one who everything was created for and nothing was created or made without Him. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords…we are brought to our knees in awe of His power and might and in awe of the fact that despite knowing who we were He loved us and took our punishment for us so we could live forever with Him…if this doesn’t bring a person to their knees I don’t know what will.
If we are faithful to commit to Him then He will commit to us and He promises He will never leave nor forsake us and that whatever we ask in His name He will provide for us. He will always stay and never leave. He promises to be our shelter in the storms of this life, to be our provider, healer, sustainer, our deliverer, our sanctuary, He promises to be everything we need and more and all of this plus our salvation and what does He ask? Only that we commit ourselves and lives to Him and Love Him…nowhere else can we find such a gift or one so faithful as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and nowhere else can we find a better example of commitment that we find in Him.
Father God in Heaven,
It is my prayer that your will be done in my life. Right now I commit myself and my life to you and ask that your will be done in my life. Let my thoughts, words and actions be of you and when others see me let them not see me but instead to see you and your love pouring as you have said like the fountain of living water that you are within us….we shall never thirst or go hungry. Help us to extend to others this living water and bread of life that is You Lord Jesus and help to be an example to others just as you have been and continue to be an example to all of us. Our mouths will utter your praises always Lord Jesus. Thank you for your gift of forgiveness, salvation and reconciliation to God our Father in Heaven. We lift this prayer now before you asking all this in your mighty, powerful, amazing name.
Amen and Amen!
One final thought my brothers and sisters in Jesus…Let us continue to run this good race with our eyes on the final reward and with commitment to our Lord in our hearts always. For our award in heaven is so much more than anything else we could ever achieve or do in this life. God bless each and every one of you. Now, may God’s love keep, surround and fill you this day and always.
