Hello all!

I have come to say I'm expressing great concern over my teenage daughter and my friend Belinda's teenage son.

Recently Belinda's son Ricky has introduced my daughter Caitlayn to this strange video game called Persona 5 Royal. While I was excited for Caitlayn to have a new bonding experience as her relationship with Ricky has been strained as of late, even though I don't believe he has the best influence on her, I'm trying to keep an open mind.

However I quickly grew concerned when I watched her play it after doing some housework. There was a scene where a teacher character had been attempting to seduce a teenage character, and not long after this happened another teenage character had tried to kill herself. This was already concerning enough however I'm also concerned as the character that is supposed to be the player's best friend has a incredibly sour attitude, as just in the small segment I had watched when this all started I had counted him swearing and using the Lord's name in vain over a dozen times.

I tried to stay optimistic as I try not to interfere with her happiness but I don't want her to stray far from the path of the Lord. At time of writing she has completed the game, I believe, but I've only gotten more concerns since, as I've been watching her play consistently to make sure things don't ever get out of hand, though I'm afraid I'm not very good at disciplining her.

One of the more concerning things is that I have reason to believe that she may be lusting after several characters in the game. This seems to reach from a teenage detective you work with briefly, however he ends up shooting the player character further along in the story, however this also reaches to an adult man who works in an 'airsoft' shop, which looks to sell guns. I'm truly ashamed, however, as she also seems to lust after one of the female characters. While the character in question seems very nice, especially since she was the subject of a teacher's lust, I cannot help but feel disgusted with my daughter for thinking of another girl in such a fashion. For a moment, I had hope, as she seemed to take interest in a normal man with a PHD, however, near the end of the game, said man seems to have a God-Complex, as people of his own creation refer to him as the Lord.

Another concerning aspect is the 'Personas' the game is named for. The characters summon them by ripping off masks in an incredibly gruesome fashion. It's very bloody and that in of itself is very concerning for my daughter, although upon further inspection you can 'fuse' these 'personas' in satanic rituals where the 'personas' are decapitated by two guillotines. I personally found this very frightful. Near the end of the story you also use these guillotines on two little girls, which is even more concerning. Among the 'personas' I've seen her use are a succubus, the Four Archangels, and what seems to be male genitalia on a wagon.

The game also takes care to show rather graphic death on multiple occasions. Several men bleed from their eyes and collapse during the course of the game, and of course the main target of my daughters lust shoots the protagonist late into the story as mentioned earlier. It's very bloody and I don't believe Caitlayn's little heart could handle it. In the latter case she looked like she was on the verge of tears.

One of the female characters is also sexually harassed by her fiance on multiple occasions. I find this to not only be a rather disgusting portrayal that tarnishes the sanctity of marriage but it is yet another disgusting display of lust that has resulted in new, unholy behaviors from my daughter.

To top it all off, near the end of the game, you face off against a God, although your goal is to kill him, you do so by summoning Satan having him shoot the God in the head.

I don't know what to make of all of this, however, I have accepted that I have failed her as a mother for not taking away this satanic game sooner, as it has not only attempted to tarnish the name of God and appropriate our religion, it has also instilled an insatiable lust in my 15 year old daughter. I can only ask if there is anything I can do to steer her back on the path of God, as I have failed to do so before she had let the game get to her.

Should I forbid her from seeing Ricky again and impart advice to Belinda to help her son, or should I wait until Caitlayn turns 18 and kick her out if she still does not listen to the word of our Lord? I don't know what to do, as I do not believe I should come down so hard on her for something that isn't inherently her fault.

Have you spoken to your daughter about it? It seems from your post that you know a lot about the game, have many concerns about your daughter, but there's no record of a conversation.

Rather than thinking in terms of discipline, why not think about your role in helping you daughter to make wise choices. How might that begin?

Should I forbid her from seeing Ricky again and impart advice to Belinda to help her son, or should I wait until Caitlayn turns 18 and kick her out if she still does not listen to the word of our Lord? I don't know what to do, as I do not believe I should come down so hard on her for something that isn't inherently her fault.

Hi Samantha, Rather than looking at this as a problem, try looking at it as an opportunity. 1 Corinthians 10:13 What you are going through is a temptation to ask your daughter to leave. It seems your daughter is being drawn into this game, and likely by forces far above her capabilities to understand, but you do! Rather than allowing the enemy to estranged you from your daughter, I would look at it as an opportunity to introduce her to the truth of the scriptures. Satan has made a mistake here, he has introduced himself into the game and he has also introduced archangels and most unwisely God. If you were introduced to the game by your daughter, you have the opportunity to explain Satan's true relationship with God, how in the book of Job, Satan could only do what God sanctioned him to do, 'you can do such and such but you mustn't take his life etc..'. Satan serves God! When Satan Tempted Jesus, Jesus won the victory. If she wants a hero she has one in Jesus. explain the truth regarding Archangels. Here you have a twofold lesson, 1 for you to read up on your scriptures for the answers and two finding a way to gain your daughters interest in the adventures in scripture, the battles and victories etc.. I suggest, you start with prayer and maybe, a little fasting. This is a serious situation, but it could end-up of great benefit. I pray the Lord will bless you and guide you.

She is under age, and needs your protection against the evil of the days. It is more important to be a good mom, than a good friend. Tell her its wrong, and why. Then enforce her not being able to play.

Hi Samantha,

I remember video games just starting out when I was in my 20s. There were games like table tennis, knocking bricks out of a wall, space invaders and later Pacman. Wow! Things have progressed haven't they? Mind you they bored me then and I doubt that even with the increased sophistication I'd be any more tempted to blow in mind numbing hours than I was then.

My son who's now in his 30s was in his teen years into a game called Grand Theft Auto which was about stealing cars and shooting policemen and I remember thinking the morals of the game were a bit dubious to say the least. But I took the view that so far as I knew there was no suspicion of drug use, he liked a beer but never once came home out of his face, never in trouble with the law and so I took the view that whilst I didn't approve of the morality of his Playstation games, yes there was a lot of room for improvement but really there was a lot of room for deterioration. I'm afraid teens will be teens and all you can do is advise, encourage and lead by example.

Anyway my son's problem wasn't so much his games, rather it was that despite my parenting example, his Sunday school and church school upbringing, he still hadn't accepted the Lord Jesus as his saviour. Over the last few years things in that department have improved a little in that he goes to church once every 3 - 4 weeks which is a step in the right direction, and I continue to pray for him.

The reason I'm telling you all this is to share with you what seems to be happening with you Caitlain. Have you found a bong or a pregnancy test in her bedroom? I appreciate her choice of games isn't exactly ideal but from what you say there's a lot of room for general deterioration there. I can't imagine why you'd want to evict your daughter just because you're unhappy with her choice of computer games. I'm also unsure why you'd encourage a 15 year old towards romantic liaisons with an older guy just because he's got a phd? Teens don't need parental pushing, it'll cause resentment and ill feeling.

Your daughter seems to be doing fine. She's sharing with you this passion she has for gaming, instead of ignoring you and being teen surly. She shares the same problem as my little boy, not being a disciple of the risen Jesus Christ. She needs you to be a shining beacon of light in her life, lots of love and encouragement but please no talk of chucking her out, kids pick up on that and that causes real emotional distress. Just Jesus's love and warmth.

=============================

Dear Lord God, thank you thank you thank you for our gorgeous lovely children. Like we are so often towards you, our heavenly father, they think they know so much but in reality have so much to learn. We love them dearly and worry when they make poor choices and bad decisions and we want to take over everything and make it all better for them but they need to grow and find their way, which is fine but if only they could see the patently obvious that they are actually so dependent upon you God. Please Lord God, pray that your Holy Spirit will be banging on the door of the hearts of Caitlain and Luke and convince them that they really really need you God.

I pray for my dear sister Samantha, pray you'll give her the love and wisdom for her to shine and draw her daughter to you.

Amen.

Hello Samantha Mills
Don't worry about your child. Focus on Jesus not on the storm that destroys everything. Even Peter and his friends were so much worried and frightened what is going to happen but never thought of Jesus who is already in their boat. He is always near to you and your daughter. Just have faith that Jesus only can do miracles. Whatever the situation, don't elaborate or think about that situation, just think Jesus is with you and ask him to stop the storm. He just did when they call Him. You too call Jesus. He will answer your prayers in no time. You love your daughter right? then give everything to Jesus and let him handle the storm thats destroying your precious child. I will also pray for her. Don't worry. She will be fine in the hands of Jesus. She will become one of followers of Jesus. She will surely testify how Jesus came to her. Jesus loves you and your daughter. Don't forget that.

Ok here’s my opinion from someone who was played through persona 5 royal recently. First of all, if your child is under 18 they shouldn’t be playing it without your consent.

In Persona 5 Royal, you play as a teenage boy in highschool. His main goal is to reform society from evil adults. They do this by going to the evildoer’s subconscious mind and changing ‘their heart’ so these evil adults become good and in turn, confess their crimes to police.

For the teacher part, in the game a Pervy Teacher sexually and physically assaults students, to the point that a student attempted suicide. The main protagonist and his friends enter his subconscious to change his heart so he can confess his crimes and go to jail for what he has done.

The air-soft shop is place where the protagonist and his friends buy equipment to prepare themselves. When the protagonist enters people subconscious they fight demons and they use the equipment they buy at the air-soft shop to fight demons.

Is the game demonic, no. But it’s not sunshine and rainbows either. In the game you fight demons with equipment and personas. Personas are entities that help the main character and his friends fight demons. They are often inspired off of real world things but aren’t their literal interpretation.

Is the game anti-Christian, no. It doesn’t try to dispel Christian beliefs. While some parts may look evil, it’s up to the protagonist to beat evil and not endorse it.

That’s a simple run down of Persona 5 Royal. Whether you let your children play this game or not is entirely up to you, but I’ll atleast give you an idea about what the game actually is. It’s about teenagers trying to rid society of evil adults by changing their hearts so they can confess their crimes and go to jail.

Why would you kick her out, and not instead teach her your contrast of these character depictions?

Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.
Teach her.

The MEANING of our Lord's words.

If you have watched an action movie, a detective movie, a scary movie, or just about anything on television you will find that the same contrast can be made and evil can be found out. So, Teach her..

Greeting Samantha,

The rebellious teenage years really do test us sister, all of us that have children. But if we are hard with them they will rebel all the more and a wedge will be driven between you.

It is a hard one, try talk with her, try to show your interest in what she is being drawn towards, you may be able to pick something out and say that is alright or sensible, she is expecting the opposite, then later when you see something totally unacceptable, rather than word it that way, just gently ask, do you really like that, try to talk and do everything on prayer and in Love. Throwiing her out at 18 would not be in love! Ask, what would Jesus do?

Our dear friend sums things up nicely below...

Bless you

I know what you mean. I only play RPG games. I have been playing FF series, since I was a child. I spent years playing Final Fantasy 14 online (aka Final Fantasy XIV) and I still do. Costs me about $12 monthly, and it does not end. I like the social aspect of it. At least it is necessary to make friends and build healthy communications to play it, but we always need to ask if God is OK with us doing this. Final Fantasy games are huge, but sadly they are also full of witchcraft and stories about false gods.
