I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Indeed, the Protector of Israel does not slumber or sleep. Psalm 121:1-4 CSB
The Hebrew word for help here, ezer, carries the idea of a constant shield, of God’s ongoing divine protection. God’s care isn’t passive. The Maker of heaven and earth doesn’t sit back and watch His creation as if it were a theater production. He actively guides and protects His people, and He never falls asleep on the job.
In context, the psalmist was contrasting Yahweh with other deities in the Middle East, who were often depicted as sleeping—as good an explanation as any for the sneaky and self-serving behavior of the wicked. Nowadays, we hear of sleepless deities—commerce, news cycles, social media—and wonder when God will show Himself.
Psalm 121 assures us that we’re not looking for Him pointlessly. We can’t see Him personally, not yet, but everything in the Bible reveals that He is constantly attentive to us, deeply invested in our welfare, and able to help us in every struggle. God watches over us in this life, and He will never stop.
Prayer: Lord God, I don’t look to You in vain. You are my help, my constant protector. Keep me on Your path today.
