James 3 (New Living Translation)

James 3

Controlling the Tongue

1 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

7 People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! 11 Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? 12 Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.[c]

Yes indeed.....and what can we say? Jesus only knows that by His grace alone we are saved.

Lord Jesus be with us as we seek to master this unruly member of our perishiable frame.

"Our hope is in you Lord. Our trust is in you Lord". Where is the piano? We sing a song of joy that He loves us still.

"Unto thee O lord do I lift up my soul. O my God I trust in thee, Let me not be ashamed let not my enimies triumph over me"

Sometimes I speak without thinking and remember Proverb 29:20 "Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him."

But most times my toungue is out of control when I'm angry. It seems impossible to control at that time, but afterward I regret every thing I've said.

Mouse, for you I have a scripture for you to meditate on.
2 Timothy 1:7: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Before a word forms in our mouth we think it first. The power to control your thoughts and your tongue already resides in you, it was a gift given to you upon receiving the holy spirit, you just need to pray as to what's keeping you from being able to use this gift.

Thanks kaikeline, I shall meditate on this. A "sound mind" sometimes feels so far away though.

I too have made more than enough mistakes with my tongue. Its amazing how much damage, hurt, regrets the tongue can cause. But, we DO have control and *no excuses*.

Sure, we're human but GOD cannot be mocked. He knows we have control because the Spirit that lives in us is greater than He of the world.

1 John 4:4

This is a great passage as our words can be just as damaging as physical abuse.

You're welcome Mouse! It does for me too that's why I have to constantly be praying on things as they happen so I don't lose control and renewing my mind with the word daily. If I ever miss a day I feel it. I memorize scriptures and I just repeat them over and over and over in my head, sounds crazy, but it does wonders.

I am very thankful God let us know the importance in what comes out of our mouths b/c yes they can hurt just as much as being physically harmed. I'm sure there are some people who would have wished they got punched verses hearing what came out of that ones mouth, lol.
