John 16:7-9 Conviction is NOT I repeat not for you! Being convinced is for you!( Rom 8:38-39) I have debated long and prayed a great deal before bringing up this subject, because it can become very emotional. You will not find any chapter or verse where Holy Spirit convicts the believer, not one! Words like "well Jesus convicted me,or Holy Spirit in me convicted me not to sin" is an out right lie!

My brother got a D.U.I a few years ago,he was convicted of the crime he committed,he felt real bad,not because of the offense! But rather because he was convicted and had to suffer a consequence to his action. Conviction leaves no escape, when Jesus always leads us to one!( Rom 2:4,and 1 Cor 10:13!) It is not conviction that leads us to repent, but rather God's kindness which does, because with his kindness in truth, there is always grace associated with it!( John 1:14) not conviction! We really had a time in our church over this one!! LOL

You see people wish to move there feeling and emotion towards, there faith, when faith is not about any feeling or emotion. Can you have them? SURE!! But remember, the fruit of the Spirit is also self control!( gal 5:22-24!) A subject much needed to be talked about in our church today! For brothers and sisters,if we in Christ can not be in control of our own feeling and emotion, how can we ever bear any fruit to others to follow after us, who walk in following our Christ Jesus??

For any pastor the very first fruit I look for comes from his very children. If they are behaved, then I know this Pastor has self control, for his very children are a mirror towards him, whether he knows this or not! Notice please something else, all through the Word of God,are any of the disciples convicted,in there own mindset? Is any sin whatsoever mentioned, in accordance to there walk? Not one! Why? Were they not human like us? They sure were not sinless!

We know this is very true, and simple by what Paul himself said!( Phil 3:12-14!!) But notice what Paul himself says!!verse 14!!! Conviction holds us in place,we cannot move forward under conviction! Conviction grounds the believer in guilt, sorrow, and yes condemnation! Yes brothers and sisters we are going to make mistakes,I myself make them every single day,but I am never convicted by them,I press forward in being what Jesus told me to be!!

An OVER COMER! Conviction leads to fear, and fear leads to doubt, and doubt to me brothers and sisters,is what the Word talks about when the Word says to crucify the flesh daily, crucify it of its feeling and emotion concerning ones belief in Christ's faith! For it is not by my own faith I am saved( Eph 2:8-10) but rather by my belief,in his faith!( John 6:28-29,my only work!) We simply take our Jesus at his own word,we are not convicted to do so,we are rather loved to do so!( john 3:16) (John 13:34-35)

I know many will wish to argue this right up until Jesus comes back, but for those of you who will consider this in your own life, as I have, you will then understand what hope in Christ Jesus is all about!!( Rom 15:13) And understand keeping HIS peace!( John 14:1,and verse 27! If we stand convicted, then we stand alone, and to the believer we are NEVER alone! Jesus is our Mediator!( 1 Tim 2:1-8!!) look close at verse 8! What Holy Hands can one lift up if the mindset is convicted? Again brothers and sister,I do not tell you,i rather ask you to consider this, for i have myself, and I thank my Lord each day for his goodness, for in his very goodness, there is never any conviction to it!( Psalm 27:13!!!) Peace be with you all amen!

There are two distinct meanings to the word conviction
  • to be found guilty - condemned
  • to be convinced of something
As Christians we never stand condemned. But we are often convicted - corrected and set on the right path - by the work of the spirit in us.
Is that in keeping with what you are saying here?

who's spirit? our own? If you say yes to this I agree. Not by Holy Spirit though,if you believe this, you will have to show chapter and verse to me hehe.

There is no condemnation for a believer but the Holy spirit will cinvict us when we do wrong. This is how we know that we need to check up on something and repent and change our ways or seek forgiveness. It is in this conviction that we learn of our wrong ways.

Chapter and verse wired?? humm?
For ? The verses you used really do not support this a 100 percent.
For example Brother Brighthouse - How does ( Phil 3:12-14!!) support conviction and such as you mentioned ?
Paul is talking about howe he has learned to forget about the past and focus on the the things ahead. This is simply keeping our eyes and hearts fixed on Jesus. Where does conviction and condemnation fit in to this ?

You ask for scriptures and I have not understood how the scriptures you use fit.
Can you help me see this ?
Blessings
Jim

convicted and conviction are to different things Brother Bright House.
Conviction and condemnation are different.

Webster says it like this
Full Definition
1
:the act or process of finding a person guilty of a crime especially in a court of law
2
a :the act of convincing a person of error or of compelling the admission of a truth

b :the state of being convinced of error or compelled to admit the truth

Notice the last two..............that is exactly what the Holy Spirit does........shows us our error so we can correct it and line back up with His truth........this is known as conviction..........
Blessings
Jim

I'm not out to prove anything, but to understand what you are saying. Jim has posted more articulate definitions of the different uses of convict. It occurs to me that the issue might be more about the slippery nature of English words than a doctrinal difference.
  • The Holy Spirit does not condemn those who belong to Christ
  • The Holy Spirit does guide and correct those who belong to Christ.
Or am I missing something?

...or if a real-life example is more helpful.
A few years ago I was in a very ugly situation at work. Lots of power-play, broken promises and poor treatment of staff who were in a vulnerable position.
With many others I spoke up about the injustices and the hypocrisy, but as the situation continued I began to get absorbed by the bitterness and anger.
The Holy Spirit showed me where I was in the wrong, led me to understand what was happening within myself and took me back to such principles as "love your enemies". I had to go through a process of repentance, learn to forgive and hold my anger lightly.
I'm sure that most of us who have been following Jesus for some time will have gone through similar experiences where the Holy Spirit has corrected and guided when we've gone off the path.
Many Christians would describe this as conviction by the Spirit.

Hello Hekuran,
Exactly !! It is that small tug in your heart and or spirit by the Holy Spirit allowing us to know something is amiss.
God Bless
Jim

The Holy Spirit will never discourage a Christian.

The Holy Spirit works to build us up, not tear us down.

That being said, often times we Christians do need to be convicted and destroyed and our hearts need to be broken.

The Holy Spirit will help us to see our arrogance, our selfishness, our immorality, our blasphemy, our idolatry... and in doing this The Holy Spirit greatly blesses us.

Because The Holy Spirit does not leave us without hope concerning our sinfulness.... The Holy Spirit always testifies to us that we have a God who loves us enough to die on the cross for us.

The Holy Spirit will convict us, only to encourage us that we can do better through faith In Christ's atoning blood.

I have never seen the word convicted as ever being a good thing. LOL And still there is no scripture to ever support Holy Spirit does this to any believer ,unbelievers YES! Convincing is far different the convicted brother Jim! Or are you saying one can be convinced of being convicted??( I agree with you on this in self! or flesh but not by Holy Spirit) lol I ask only for chapter and verse, i have showed several, of why you are never convicted. And you will not find one either. Phil 3:12-14 talks about moving forward in our life, and if we look to feel convicted in our lives, it is most difficult to ever move forward. Conviction is a weight upon the backs of many believers, a weight which Heb 12:1 says that can so easily beset us. Blessing bro. Conviction simply put is far from a blessing to me!

Conviction.

In a court of law, a criminal is convicted of his crime. This is based on the evidence presented again him (or her). The criminal may or may not be convinced himself (herself), that he or she is guilty though. Regardless of whether the criminal is convinced or not, they will be sentenced to whatever punishment is seen fit by those who convicted them.

The Spirit of God has come to convict the world of sin. The world will not be convinced of it's sin because it doesn't want to be, it want's to believe it is without sin.

I am convicted of my sin in that I know that apart from Christ I am guilty of high treason and deserve to be cast into eternal damnation. I'm am quite convinced of my sin as well, that's why I came to Jesus to cleanse me of it. If I had not been convinced of my sin, I never would have turned to Christ. All mankind is/will be convicted of their sin. The question is, are you convinced of it, and what are you going to do about it? Will you come and fall at the foot of cross, and cling to him to save you? Also, there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. My sins have been atoned for, there is nothing for which God needs to convict me concerning my salvation, my right standing with God.

The Holy Spirit is not looking to convict me in a court of law, there is no reason to, all my sin has been paid for with the precious blood of Christ. Is God against himself? That's silly.

conviction does not equal convincing

I truly hope the point I made here is received in the exact same love Jesus has for each one of us! There are many, who like myself, never wish to ever go back to the law,but without the law, we ourselves would never have known what sin was without it!( Rom 3:20, and Rom 5:20!!) Here is the true contrast of the shadow of what was,and the reality of what now is!( 2 Kings1:12 convicted!) vs Luke 9:54-56! saved without being convicted!

All because of what Jesus has already done for each believer. The finished work of our Jesus, also frees us through him,of the law.Rom 10:4) So when I do sin, which of course I do either in thought word or deed what does that make me? It makes me so very THANKFUL,for what our Jesus did, to keep me free through his most precious blood!( 1 thess 5:18) LOVE is not only a word, but an action, and the reason this is such an important foundation,is because the fruit of the Spirit through love is also an action!( Gal 5:22-25!!!)

LOVE causes a living reality of producing joy, from love, and from joy, peace is established( Rom 15:13) peace leads to endurance in patience( Heb 10:36),so that the believer can always be this to others, as well as himself, or herself, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and the very last part of the fruit, which can only become established by the first part of the fruit!! The love branch( john 15:2-9!!!) extends to SELF CONTROL! Control of ones own feeling an emotion, to always line up with the Truth there by setting us all free( john 8:32)and best of all, keeping us free through our Mighty Jesus!( rom 8:31-39!) Can our feeling and emotion? This, only each one of us can judge. But not mine brothers and sisters! My hope is that each who reads this become more bold in each of our ministry's,for indeed each one of us has one!!!( 2 cor 5:17-21!!)

I think the bible verse on not get carried away with meanings of words etc is needed in this thread.

And we should fight any guilt arrows and accusations as being of the enemy if after asking forgivness we still feel guilty and pains in the heart etc.
Stand With faith in the word continually if need be due to guilt attacks, and keep keep standing and never give in
Put on the whole armour of God, and be assured in Christ's wholeness which he offers us forever due to his blood cleansing us from all sin .
