I've just watched a video of depeche mode called "personal jesus" on MTV & was wondering is it considered a GOOD or BAD song in the eyes of God/Jesus Christ? I haven't checked the lyrics of the whole song but iknow he talks about faith, forgiviness, etc
I've listened to this song before but hadn't studied the Bible so i didn't know what he was talking about but now i understand better.
I like the song & the tune but the title "personal jesus" seems wrong.
Does any of you know what this song is about? Is it bad in God's eyes if I listen to this song? Will it bring me closer to God/Jesus or further away from him?

If its being promoted on MTV, its probably not intended to honor Jesus. I too watched the video and saw nothing that indicated respect for Him. True to my experience with MTV, I was not able to understand the words of the song due to the extra loud percussion instruments. In Christian music, percussion instruments do not drown out the words.

Brother SpiritLedEd is completely right. I would also like to add the person on the other line is not Jesus Christ the Savior of this world. It is a counterfeit Jesus. Marilyn Manson also sang this song. The only difference marilyn manson was not shy with displaying demonic symbols. The video you saw may seem normal with it's western scenes, but when you remove the theatrics you see the real story they are trying to tell.

The song in it's deceptive context is asking us to put our trust and faith in a Jesus, because he listens to our prayers and he's there. For us to pick up the phone and he'll make us a believer. It goes as far as claiming it's a forgiver. The deception and identity is revealed in verse 2..

Take second best
Put me to the test

Jesus Christ is the Best and our first choice.
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

"Take second best" implies we take the next best thing which tends to be a down grade of the best. If this song was about the real Jesus that line would go " take the best and put me to the test." Therefore the identity of this Jesus is a counterfeit. This deity can represent the devil and our fleshy desires.

Flesh and bone by the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
I will deliver

Here he's asking you to take his call, so he can make you a believer. The caller is not Jesus but a counterfeit.

In the video the men enters a brothel to fulfill their fleshly desires. The women are dressed in black, they have blank faces and stares giving off a deceptive vibe yet seductive. A mirror appears twice in the video, 1st scene shows a woman looking at herself with 3 hats on it, the second scene is at the very end a 4th hat is thrown on the mirror. Symbols leading up to each mirror scene. 1st they enter the house walking under a wheel with candles ( chandelier ). In the occult the wheel " the circle of life."

WHEEL: A universal symbol of or cosmic unity, astrology, "the circle of life," evolution, etc. The pagan sacred circle plus any number of radiating spokes or petals form the wheel - a Wheel of Life to Buddhists, a Medicine Wheel to Native Americans, a Mandala to Hindus. It symbolizes unity, movement, the sun, the zodiac, reincarnation, and earth's cycles of renewal. Pagans use it in astrology, magic and many kinds of rituals. (See Medicine Wheel and Quartered Circle)
This SUN WHEEL became a magical amulet to the Celtic Gauls or Gaels in Europe. Later, "Christians adopted the form, changing it slightly, so that it became a Christ monogram drawn within a circle." [crossroad.to]

Exactly before the mirror scene he walks by a symbol on the wall that looks like a cross but the lines are equal in length inside a box. The quartered box represent the quartered circle.

CIRCLE (Quartered): The sacred circle filled with a cross, four equal lines pointing from the center to the spirits of the north, east, south, and west -- or to the basic element: earth, water, air (or wind), and fire. In Native American traditions, it forms the basic pattern of the MEDICINE WHEEL and plays a vital part in major spiritual rituals. Many contemporary pagans consider it their main symbol for transmitting the energy of the goddess. (See sun wheel) Churches have used variations of the same popular shape, usually calling it the Celtic Cross. [crossroad.to]

I'll connect the bold text at the end.

Before the 2nd mirror scene someone rides to a pay phone to pick up the receiver. ( I guess to become a believer ). Then a woman is seen giving the lead singer a kiss on his ring ( sign of loyalty and devotion) The last image of the mirror with a 4th hat being thrown on it. The video ends with him says. Reach out and touch me.

In the occult the mirror is used to contact spirits or to transmit energy as the medicine wheel. So it's no coincidence the fourth hat is thrown on the mirror ( 4 men in the video ) before he says reach out and touch me. The lead singer is seen standing between pillars randomly in the video that can represent " gateways ." The first pillar they meet is dark, the last ones are in the light. ( Have become enlightened ). This video in no way is talking about our Lord and Savior. Instead it is asking you to call on a false Jesus, one who would satisfy your flesh, he is second best , it is a mockery of what Jesus stands for.

The woman in the mirror ( her reflection is what you see ) can represent the devil or their sexual desires. The four men is represented by their hats. The hats being on the mirror can translate communication was made between them and false Jesus.

Do not listen to this song for it will not draw you close to God but away. This video is also filled with sexual imagery without being graphic. The true meaning has nothing to do with Jesus our savior, but the occult. It's a commercial ad for the false Jesus. The video have been exposed it's your choice if you want to continue.

“put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:11-12).

“When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire [an ancient occult practice], or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination [detestable] to the LORD…”
—Deuteronomy 18:9-12a

10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. DEUTERONOMY 18: 10-13

Thank you both for your precise & informative answers, I remember listening to depeche mode's personal jesus a few years ago many times & at the time i remember my brother wasn't happy that i was listening to this horrible song, ironically he was studying the Bible at that time & i can see why he disaprroved me listening to it. But i wasn't aware that this song was evil & disrespectful towards God/ Jesus because I hadn't studied the Bible so i didn't know anything about God/Jesus.

For the last few weeks I've studied the Bible online at Watch Tower & I've learnt about God Jehovah, Jesus Christ & God's Will.
So watching the video the other day, btw it was on Bliss or the Vault which are English Music channels, it wasn't on MTV, I felt bad & guilty watching it, like it was wrong & i shouldn't listen to this song ever again. After reading the lyrics you're right the singer talks about a fake created Jesus which is so wrong & disrespectful.

I now dislike this song A LOT & i can't believe some people like this song, if you search this song on youtube you'll see people posting comments like " its awesome", these people can't be christians? they must be considered antichrist?
And the real guilty & evil ones are the members of depeche mode how can they write such a horrible & disrespectful song against God Almighty & Jesus our Lord? Why do tv companies & youtube allow these songs?

I've been looking at my favourite songs on youtube & I didn't realise I've got some bad songs what are against Jesus, but those videos I added were a long time ago when I hadn't studied the Bible now I feel terrible & I've deleted all songs what are disrespectful or against God Almighty / Jesus Christ.

It just shows how powerful songs are & can have a negative impact on our relationship with God.

Can you tell me some songs i should avoid listening to? I've got a few in mind, at the time i didn't realise but now I know these songs are against our Lord & Saviour Jesus, I'm sure you agree these songs shouldn't be listened to if we want God/Jesus on our side:

1 Green Day Jesus of Subarbia

2 Green Day East Jesus nowhere ( can't believe the producers allowed them to play this LIVE at the MTV music awards 2009)

3 Marilyn Manson Armageddon ( I would consider this a bad song which God would dislike wouldnt you?)

4 666 Diablo, D.E.V.I.L & all other songs of 666 ( now this is really bad & evil, I don't knpw if you know this techno group but not only is it anti God but it praises Satan the devil, I DISLIKE them with a passion)

5 Oasis Lord dont slow me down ( I want your opinions on this song is it a good or bad song in the eyes of God? I've deleted it from my youtube videos as i wasn't sure?)

6 Faithless ( Many people including me like the song insomnia I dont know if you know it? But think about it the word "Faithless" is bad & against God/ Jesus, it means lacking faith so in other word lacking faith in our Lord so should this song be avoided?)

I'm sure there are many other songs which would displease God, next time i see one on TV i'll try switching channel for sure!!

I admit I've listened to quite a few "wrong" songs which hasn't pleased God/ Jesus so do you think I should pray & ask for forgiveness, I feel the need to apologise & I'm truly sorry & if I repent will God forgive me? I consider listening to those songs as a Sin.

Definitely not a Christian song, and was never intended to be.

Beware of the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society. That's the legal name of the Jehovah's Witnesses organization. They try to pose as Christian, but, they do not believe that Jesus is God. Their beliefs are opposed to true Christianity. Our administrator Chad has posted a good Christian Bible Study link on our home page. I suggest you check it out.

Repentance means a change of direction. God always forgives when the sinner truly repents.

Hi

Depeche Mode never thought of themselves as a Christian band.

The song is a satire. It is lampooning a cynical televangelist preying on lonely and vulnerable people. "Pick up the receiver and I'll made you a believer".

Johnny Cash also covered this song. American IV.

Agreed, it isn't a song about the real Jesus nor does Depeche Mode or any of the other performers of this song claim to be Christian. It is a song about televangelists and the like and what these types of people have made Jesus into: a money making venture. Its an attack on the the people who peddle Jesus to make a profit and for power and fame. Not saying that makes it much better or that Christians should be listening to it, though.

And for the record, there's plenty of Christian music with loud percussion and, to the untrained ear, unintelligible words. Haste the Day, Becoming the Archetype, or even relatively less metal and hard Pillar or Skillet are Christian bands with solid messages who's music resembles secular metal and rock. Does the sound make the message less Christian? I say if it brings people to Christ, spreads the message, and has a good message, than more power to it.

Good post, jonoman. Sadly, we've brought this upon ourselves by allowing ourselves to be sucked into the subtle, slick marketing traps these people use. I would add this however: people who are truly seeking Christ may fall into the spiritual mudholes these people create, but its been my experience that the Holy Spirit will draw them out of the mud and set their feet on solid ground.

You didn't do anything wrong, I only removed the lyrics because it's just as harmful as the video. There's power in music. Some people see it as a "thing" we should not make a big deal of. Those people tend to be the ones who only know of Jesus and lack a relationship with him. They see nothing wrong with combining witchcraft and paganism if it's repackaged in a christian label. They are the ones who bear fruits but not fruits of the spirit.

I'm sorry I made you feel you did something wrong, I know your intentions was good. I didn't want anyone reading out the lyrics.

God bless

We have two hearing levels: the conscious level and the sub-conscious level. Even if we are not actively listening to a song (the conscious level), our mind is absorbing the words and music at the sub-conscious level and they are having an impact on us.

There is something more, you do not even need lyrics to destroy people. Something that posters on the "Is Heavy Metal Wrong" thread failed to grasp is that music on its own can be excruciatingly destructive! When coupled with bad lyrics, music can act like a hammer driving a six inch (the lyrics) nail into you. In fact it can go so far as to induce astral projection. I try and try to tell people this but nobody wants to listen, even going so far as to claim you can worship God with black metal so long as you "sing about nice things". I come from a background of deep musical study, in harmony, counterpoint, form and orchestration, studying dozens of genres, I'm not making this assessment on a whim. I just want Christians to be more careful of what they allow into their hearts and minds. I have witnessed something seemingly as small as single bad piece of music destroy people, and a lot of young Christians fall away. It's deeply destressing.

That's so true. My mind is like a sponge so I have to be careful.
