That is not an easy one other than by prayer as you say. There are different types of depression. Have you seen a doctor as they can give you pills to help you?

I know that depression is not good. Try and focus on Jesus and seek Him first.

Listen to praise and worship music for it sure does lift the spirit.

I found this information which may help you too.

Question: "What does the Bible say about depression? How can a Christian overcome depression?"

Answer: Depression is a widespread condition, affecting millions of people, Christian and non-Christian alike. Those suffering from depression can experience intense feelings of sadness, anger, hopelessness, fatigue, and a variety of other symptoms. They may begin to feel useless and even suicidal, losing interest in things and people that they once enjoyed. Depression is often triggered by life circumstances, such as a loss of job, death of a loved one, or divorce, or psychological problems such as abuse or low self-esteem.

The Bible tells us to be filled with joy and praise (Philippians 4:4; Romans 15:11), so God apparently intends for us all to live joyful lives. This is not easy for someone suffering from situational depression, but it can be remedied through God's gifts of prayer, Bible study and application, support groups, home groups, fellowship among believers, confession, forgiveness, and counseling. We must make the conscious effort to not be absorbed in ourselves, but rather to turn our efforts outward. Feelings of depression can often be solved when the sufferer takes the focus off himself and puts it on Christ and others.

Clinical depression is a physical condition that must be diagnosed by a physician. It is not caused by unfortunate life circumstances, nor can the symptoms be alleviated by one's own will. Contrary to what some in the Christian community believe, clinical depression is not always caused by sin. Depression can sometimes be a disorder that needs to be treated with medication and/or counseling. Of course, God is able to cure any disease or disorder. However, in some cases, seeing a doctor for depression is no different than seeing a doctor for an injury.

There are some things that those who suffer from depression can do to alleviate their anxiety. They should make sure that they are staying in the Word, even when they don't feel like it. Emotions can lead us astray, but God's Word stands firm and unchanging. We must maintain strong faith in God, and hold even tighter to Him when we undergo trials and temptations. The Bible tells us that God will never allow temptations into our lives that are too much for us to handle (1 Corinthians 10:13). Although being depressed is not a sin, one is still responsible for how he responds to his affliction, including getting the professional help he needs. "With Jesus' help, let us continually offer our sacrifice of praise to God by proclaiming the glory of his name" (Hebrews 13:15).

LadylovesJesus, your post was right on.

Minory girl, I have clinical depression. Put all your focus on Lord Jesus Christ and pray for healing from Him. Study the word of God, ask others to pray for you, pray yourself and you will get through the fog of despondency and depression. We are just victims of this world if we don't pray and honor our Lord. Make a pledge to yourself and to God, that you will take His yoke and follow Him. He is sweet, gentle, kind, compassionate, caring, welcoming and so many other great things is He.

Sometimes we are persecuted for the sake of the kingdom of Heaven. In this we should have patience and hope.

Luke 6
20Looking at his disciples, he said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.

It sounds kind of glib to just say hang in there, in fact I couldn't stand it when people told me that when I was at an all time low. But guess what, you gotta do it. You gotta hang in, keep your chin up and conquer the enemy that robs you of joy. Keep yourself immersed in faith and hope in His return. I am an example of someone that has overcome many disabilities and have succeeded in breaking the chains that bound me. I am still disabled, but I rule my disability it doesn't rule me.

So blessed are you who weep, (thats you minory) for you will laugh, (that is you in the future, with a Christ centered life). Hope a bunch of angels look after you and smile. God Bless and Amen:Pixie:love: :sun: :rainbow:

Please mediate on these Scripture. I will keep you in prayer sister!

Concealing sin often leads to depression. If you confess your sins and turn from them you will find mercy.

Proverbs 28:13
13 People who conceal their sins will not prosper,
but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.

(examples: Gen 4:6-7, Psalms 32:3-4)

Think of what Paul went through without getting depressed, sustained by God's grace.

2 Corinthians 11:23-28
23 Are they servants of Christ? I know I sound like a madman, but I have served him far more! I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again. 24 Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea. 26 I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. 27 I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.
28 Then, besides all this, I have the daily burden of my concern for all the churches.

Put your hope in God when you are downcast

Psalm 42:5-6
5 Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again—
my Savior and 6 my God!
Now I am deeply discouraged,
but I will remember you—
even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan,
from the land of Mount Mizar.

Hi minory girl,

As a fellow Christian who suffers from clinical depression the first advice I would give is to see your GP, he or she will know if you need medication. Never feel ashamed of taking medication for depression if needed. As has been said if you were injured ie broken leg, you would go to a doctor for help.

Having said that, it says in Romans 12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind..." Renew your mind to think like Christ thought, not negative thoughts etc. Read your Bible, even if it is only a verse or two and think on these verses. There's no point just reading and walking away. The Psalms are a good place to read, David went through so much, and there is always some Psalm for the way you are feeling. Listen to Christian music that will help you feel better, lift your spirits. Before you know it you will be singing along and thinking differently. Start thinking of now (today) and not the weeks and months ahead. It's so easy to think "I will always be like this." It can seem hopeless to be in the pit of depression, but there is hope. Jesus always gives us hope. For a start He has promised never to leave us or forsake us.

This poem may help you:

I was regretting the past and fearing the future.
Suddenly I heard God speaking, "My Name is 'I AM.'"
He paused. I waited.
He continued, "When you live in the past with its mistakes and regrets, it is hard for you because I am not there.
My Name is not 'I WAS.'"
"When you live in the future with its unknowns and fears, it is hard for you because I am not there.
My Name is not 'I WILL BE.'"
But when you live in this moment, it is not hard, because I am here.
My Name is 'I AM.'"

Sunshine speaks the truth.

Also here are some verses to meditate on and some advice from other Christians who have become depressed.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. (James 5:13)

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word. (Psalm 119:28)

7-Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8- Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9- Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 12- Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. (Psalm 51:7-9, 12)

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13)

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

The spirit and mind is a lot like the body in that it requires food to live. We feed our bodies nutritious things to keep it well and healthy, but sometimes we feed it junk that can make us sick. It is exactly like this for the soul also. We sometimes feed it good food that encourages it and uplifts it and makes us feel light and happy. Other times we feed it junk such as bad thoughts, sad situations, hopelessness, etc. that can lead to depression.

Of course we know that there are drugs out there to help chemical imbalances which can even out moods and make folks deal with things better. But frankly, there is no better drug than our Lord Jesus Christ. He can take away your depression. He can lift your spirits and make you feel light with His love and mercy.

He's been there. He's felt and seen the sadness and depression. He's dealt with every emotion there is, and no mental disorder or chemical imbalance or depression syndrome, or whatever you want to call it is too much for Him to deal with. He gave us Doctors and Scientists with wisdom and intelligence enough to create medicine to help our disorders, but the medicine alone will not help when your soul is void of the Lord. He can fill the void, lift the spirit, lighten the mind and make your soul soar.

I don't know what the Bible says about it, and I was very critical of people that were depressed, until I became depressed 6 months ago, and had to seek Medical help..I sought God for months..before the medical doctors..I now know what it is like to be depressed I have walked in the shoes of a depressed person.

Read for yourself from Lamentations 3:

16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. 18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD ."

19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:

22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him."

25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD . 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.

28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. 29 Let him bury his face in the dust- there may yet be hope. 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace.

31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men. (NIV)

After much depressing grief, Jeremiah turns his mind to the Lord. This is the same pattern that is seen in the Psalms and why these writings are in the Bible. If we never turn our hope to the Lord, we are more likely to stay stuck. If anger and forgiveness have been negotiated with our Lord's help, (including counselors) and your emotions are still unhealthy, then you may have a chemical imbalance that a wonder drug can cure. I can certainly relate. I need divinity, debt cancelling and drugs in order to bring glory to Christ at the workplace.

Dear Minory
seems like quite a few of us suffer what you have.

my favourite verse is 'when I am overwhelmed lead me to the rock which is higher than I' Psalm 61 V 2

I also suffer from Bipolar Manic Depression, and have been hospitalized.

I have to have medication, but I thank my God, that he brought me through.

He gave our Doctors and Nurses the ability to help us, and we should use them because of that.

I pray you will find help but Jesus is also waiting to help us. He asks what it is we require of Him to do, as he asked the lepers and the blind, even though it was obvious what they needed. We must ask.

thanks

hi all.
Thank you to eveyone who posted advice , please keep your advice coming , you lot are:star: , thank you again

You know that when you have no one to off load to it can lead to depression. There are medical conditions for depression but generally attempting to solve your problems yourself ultimately gets you to become self focussed and into a pit of depression.

Secondly, when we do not meet the expectations of others we are condemned and we also condemn ourselves which leads to a no win situation.

However God gave us, by His Spirit, solutions in his Word!
I do not want to go in scrolls of writing and then you end up not reading what I have said. Here are some scriptures for you to read and like a prescription if you take heed to what they say, with the help of the Holy Ghost, you will overcome your depression. Because I have not spoken to you directly to get to the cause of your depression I have given different scriptures to deal with different scenarios:

read what Jesus said in:

Matthew 7:25 to 33 with emphasis verse 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; ....... Seek the kingdom of God first and Gods will above your own. What is Gods will for all men and women ... repentance. If you are self focussed you are not looking outward to others but at your own self. This is a process of growth because I used to be very introverted but the Lord turned me inside out getting me to look to the plight of others who are in sin or to those in Christ who need wisdom from His Word and the more I gave the more He gave me from His word and the more I got from His word the more I grew in Him and the more I grew in Him the more I looked outward. Gods Love is not self seeking, His love is always outward otherwise he would not have bothered with us after Adams original sin! 1 Cor 13: 1-4, 1 John 4:8

Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest ..... REST!!! Is that not what you want. What causes us to labour ... our own works, our own attempts at pleasing people and God with no possibility of ever pleasing either through them. What pleases God is a repentant heart, a heart that is willing to change. Remember what I said previously ... seek ye first the Kingdom of God ... repentance is the first step, the second step is to do His will by seeking after righteousness. Doing good works out of a relationship with Him pleases God and He will give you the desires of your heart Psalm 37:1-6 emphasis on verses 4 and 6.

Romans 8:1, There is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. If you are in Christ then you are forgiven, you are declared innocent and therefore not under condemnation! One condemns oneself when they attempt to keep the law and when they cannot they are condemned. Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, cursed is everyone that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. The law was put in place to lead us to Christ by faith and then to walk by faith Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Attempting to keep the law only produces anxiety and fear, fear of judgement because it the law given was not fulfilled. It causes stress that is unbelievably hard on the person yet if we are in Christ we are no longer under the law but under grace. We have been justified by the Blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross. Jesus said that the work of redemption was finished when he said it is finished" John 19:30.

This does not mean that the law is no longer of account, but the Holy Ghost takes the Word and writes it on our minds and our hearts causing us to grow in His likeness which is Gods righteousness. Hebrews 8:10 and 2 Corinthians 3, 1 Corinthians 3. Psalm 19, Psalm 119, Romans 7. This is then walking in relationship with God again obeying Him as He teaches us His Word 1 Corinthians 2:11-13, John 14:15-26 with emphasis on verse 26, John 16:12-15

I hope this will give better perspective because in the end psychology is a form of teaching that binds a person to this world Matthew 16 and only in Christ can we truly overcome the world!!!!

Yours in Christ

Hi All

thank you so much for the advice you have given to me , please keep you advice coming, just to let you know my depression is still getting me down , but , I will take you advice. Please keep your advice coming.

you guys are :star: , thank again

With all due respect minory girl, it's not more advice you need, but to start heeding the advice you have been given and most importantly standing on the Word of God. There's no point just reading what has been said and going away - you have got to trust God, and what it says in His Word.

Nehemiah 8:10 "Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

Dear friend - I know how you feel when the terrible weight of depression closes in on you.It is the darkest place imaginable and you will need professional and spiritual assistance to overcome.Nobody is free from depression - millionaires, poor people , presidents and kings have all suffered from this illness.I have been there to the blackest of pits where everything seems to be closing in on you but help is available through counselling, the right medication and support. Here you will find your brothers and sisters who understand and will pray for you and give you good advice. The important thing to remember is you are not alone. When things appear to be getting the better of you just say Jesus I trust in Your mercy - help me now - and He will. Please speak with a support service or your doctor but get help and soon you will feel free of this burden.I do understand and I will offer a prayer to our Father who answers every prayer.

Someone who helps you is not someone who is disrespecting you. Its vice versa in your situation for assuming so. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. In this case, its godly wisdom being fed to you. You asked for help, counsel and your given it. Why mock someone in return?

Thank you Chad for responding here.

minory girl - I was not showing disrespect to you. There comes a time when we have to take responsibility for ourselves. That includes seeing a professional if needed for depression and believing the Word of God. I haven't spoken anything to you that I have not had to do myself.

Sunshine was a moderator here at talkJesus for quite some time. She helped me and prayed with me sometimes when I became depressed.

What she is saying is that we cannot get out of this pit without stepping up out of the pit. We reached out to you in Christ's love. Now take God's hand (God is using our advice and the scriptures we give) and trust God to come out of that pit into the sunshine, sweet minory girl. We love you, but God loves you deeply with an everlasting love. He sees you right where you are and loves you right where you are.

It's up to you. Do you want out of that pit? You really do have a choice even though it may not seem like it.:sun:

Love in Christ,
Dreamer

Minory Girl, I want to add one more scripture to those that have been suggested to you. I suggest strongly that you memorize this verse and use it whenever negative thoughts about yourself and your situation start to bombard you.

"...and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."
(2 Cor 10:5b)

You have the power to decide which thoughts will take root in your mind and which ones will not. I,too, suffer from clinical depression. I've been on anti-depression medication for several years and it has certainly helped. But something else that has benefited me is consistent Scripture reading and meditation, especially Psalms and the New Testament, and sitting at the feet of good Bible teachers.

It is through the Scripture study I have done and sitting at the feet of good Bible teachers that I've learned that God's word has great Power and I have the authority from Him to excercise that power.

When I first learned this, I was afraid. But my belief was strong enough that I could take little "baby steps" of faith and trust that God would back me up. He did back me up and he continues to back me up.

When you speak 2 Cor 10:5b into a situation, its like you are fitting an arrow into a bow and aiming at a target. When you let the arrow of 2 Cor 10:5b fly, God takes charge of the trajectory and speed of the arrow, and it hits the target every single time.
