Depth of Mercy
Charles Westley

1.
Depth of mercy! Can there be
mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God his wrath forbear,
me, the chief of sinners, spare?

2.
I have long withstood his grace,
long provoked him to his face,
would not hearken to his calls,
grieved him by a thousand falls.

3.
I my Master have denied,
I afresh have crucified,
oft profaned his hallowed name,
put him to an open shame.

4.
There for me the Savior stands,
shows his wounds and spreads his hands.
God is love! I know, I feel;
Jesus weeps and loves me still.

5.
Now incline me to repent,
let me now my sins lament,
now my foul revolt deplore,
weep, believe, and sin no more.

For those who are unsure, like so many of the hymns, they can be easily adapted to fit in with the tunes you knew from your schooldays. The words may look unfamiliar to non-Methodists, but try putting them to "Loving Shepherd Of Thy Sheep, (Keep Thy Lamb In Safety Keep...")

Another perfect example is "O Jesus I have promised, to serve you to the end..." Not sure? How about "From Greenlands Icy Mountains..."

Just an idea to make it easier...

I was walking my dog, it would be last year as I write. I passed a Methodist Chapel a couple of miles from my home, and it had been converted into a private dwelling. And very pleasant it appeared too.

As I stood looking, and recalling the ministry of this great gospel preacher, a man whose ministry saved this country from revolution. I became aware of a man gardening the front of his cottage to the side of me.

As I looked I observed an elderly gentleman. He being such I began to speak of the Wesley brothers, and asked if he recalled this chapel in use as a place of worship. He was 94 years of age........wow. And doing his garden.

He did and we talked.

Relating to your post bro Chad, this man (a Cambride Don) recalled J Wesley writing a hymn on the back of an envelope, as his brother preached. Wow

WE bowed together in the morning sun, and gave thanks

This is a most beautiful hymn. I think wesley originally wrote 13 verses but many sadly have been trimmed out of the hymn books. As a pianist/organist I remember quite a few

Three that I can remember are...

I have spilt His precious blood
Trampled on the Son of God
Filled with pangs unspeakable
I, who yet am not in hell

Whence to me this waste of love
Ask my advocate above
See the cause in Jesus' face
Now before the throne of Grace

If I rightly read Thy heart
If Thou all compassion art
Bow Thine ear in mercy bow
Pardon and accept me now

What a wonderful description of the saving power and mercy of our blessed Lord Jesus.
