Does He punish us?

Recently I've wondered if God punishes us if we persistantly go off the rails.

Recently I've done some rather unpleasant things, I won't go in to detail but since then I've had quite a lot of bad 'luck' (I use that term in the broadest sense) and I've faced quite a few problems.

I'm a father and if my daughter, who I love unconditionally, misbehaves then of course I would punish her but only for her own good and out of love for her. So is it not feasible that our Heavenly Father might also do the same?

I apologise if there is scriptural evidence which quashes this theory, it's just something that's been playing on my mind and was hoping someone here could give an opinion.

TIA

ooooooo yes God chastens us!

2Sa 7:14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

here God says that he can use men as the rod to chasten us if we sin.-

Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

the word tells us that if we loves us and we are his sons that He will chasten us.

Job 5:17 Behold, happy [is] the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

Pro 3:11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

Hbr 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: Hbr 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. Hbr 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? Hbr 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

If God does not chasten us then we are told we are ******* and not sons.

God corrects us when we need it, sometimes we sin and no punishment comes because we repent quickly and our conscious judges us, but other times we may feel bound to a sin ( although in truth we are not bound) and we are in a process of becomming more and more holy and undefild and it profits our spirit, if the Lord punishes our flesh and scares that flesh so that when the flesh desires that sin, that our spirit and HIS Spirit hates, our flesh with fear Gods chastening more than it desires that sin!

I will quickly tell the worst time I was chastened by the Lord and I want to say first to keep in mind that this issues was between me and the Lord and I in no way want to say that these same things apply o anyone else.

When i was in the Lord only just under a year the Lord taught me to trust him for healing and never again to seek out drugs(witchcraft pharmekeia) or men(doctors) to do what He said He does for me. He showed me in His word that He is my healer and to stop my own works and the worlds works to do His job.

a few years of walking this way and there came a night when i had severe back pain and i had had this before, i knew the Lord is faithful to heal and deliver me but i was frustrated that day and i did not want to deal with the battle i may enter into with this so my husband said you could just take a pain pill. i knew i was not to do this, i had not taken anything at all and never needed to as the Lord is faithful but in my frustration over other things i said fine.

as i got the pill to my lips i heard the Lord say " you better not do that" and i ignored Him and popped that thing in my mouth which i think is the only time i have so clearly heard the Lord and ignored him.

before that pill even had the chance to work i was in more pain then ever in my life! i thought i was gonna die and i knew it was punishment! i was up all night feeling like i was going to die repenting and for long periods it was so bad i couldnt even speak anything but his name! it was wonderfully terrible. and it added to my fear and love for the Lord.

Our heavenly father corrects us

The correct answer to this term here is yes and No.
Our God is a all knowing God.
Firstly he sees a person whether he knows god or not.

Secondly he visit those who does not know God

Thirtly he gives a chance to know about him.

Fourtly he leads him/her through trials and tribulations to make him turn towards God.

Fiftly he speaks to him through his word of God.

Sixtly makes the person realise about his mistakes and sins he /her committed against God.

Sevently sins are forgiven and God tells about his rules and regulations to be closer to him.

After we know God then if we sin against God will punish us through trials and tribulations.

I see that some good and valid biblical answers have been put forward here. Which I accept and would not contradict

I am of the opinion that our God is a God of love. "God is Love" He that loveth dwelleth in God and God in Him.

Much befalls us in human life.. I recall when the A.I.D.S pandemic came to light, some godly brothers said that it was Gods judgement.........I had to disagree. This was the result of sin as I saw it.... God had nothing at all to do with it. This has proved to be true. "Sin brings death"

It was the result of sowing. Scripture informs "What you sow you will reap"

Many suffer as a result of what has gone before.

Regarding children, we have to chastise, we must correct, other wise truth will not be known.
"Train a child up in the way that it shall go" says the bible.

REgarding mankind. God speaks clearly to anyone giving the time to listen "God loves us.......Without variableness or change.

"God is not a man that He should lie, neither the son of men that he should change his mind"

God loves all men.....without reservation. But His love does not make us immune from problems.

The bible again says "Man is born to trouble......"

I am so glad that I belong to Jesus, I hate to think what life must be like without Him.

Good question

Proverbs 29:15 Correction and punishment make children wise,
but those left alone will disgrace their mother

God is the best dad of all and He won't expect us to discipline our kids if He doesn't do it himself

Does he punish us

What I am about to post will cause many to be in an uproar, but God does not punish us under the new covenant, he disciplines us and there is a big difference.

God will never make you sick, put you in a car wreck, hurt your kids, beat you up and any of the other things churches teach nowadays.

The chastening of the Lord means to child train, not afflict or pour his wrath out on us. So many Christians do not understand the difference between the Old Testament Law and New Testament Grace. We mix the two and it has brought major confusion into the body of Christ. Jesus bore the punishment and wrath of God for our sins and God does not leave you when you sin.

The Old Testament Law brought instant punishment for disobedience. It was the only covenant that God made with man that was conditional. Under the Law, if you did, this, this and this you were blessed. If you disobeyed, you suffered instant retribution. When Jesus came, that all changed.

2 Tim 3: 16-17 says:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Under the new covenant, God uses his word to correct us. When we sin, that sin was paid for, HOWEVER, Romans 6: 23 tells us that sin pays a wage. Its death. Jesus died for the sin of the world, but not the wage it pays. If you sin, or disobey God, his word is in operation. If we sin it hurts us. That hurt does not come from God. The wages of sin hurts us.

If your read the the 54th chapter of Isaiah, I Thess 5: 9 and look at the life of Jesus who is the exact representation of God. You will see that God is not punishing us when we blow it. Sin brings its own form of death in our lives. It’s why God hates sin, it hurts us.

When we enter this life, we will suffer persecutions, afflictions and hard knocks. It’s due to life. There are hard places in life, but if you will allow God, he will develop your character in that hard place. He already knows what you are going to do; he is just trying to get you to cooperate with him in hard times. It’s there that you learn to trust God. For example, I experienced a very hard time at work with co-workers. It took me awhile, but I soon realized my reactions toward them were ungodly and God was showing me this was an area in my life I had to allow the Holy Ghost to change me. God did not make the situation; he wanted to work with me in it to change so I knew how to walk in Love toward unlovable people. It took me some time to learn this, so it was really rough for awhile until I understood what was going on. Did God use the situation? Yes, did he create it? NO.

Folks, this is what Grace is all about. Its Gods ability working in and through you when your ability and strength will not. That is why God tells us let the weak say they are strong. Not in themselves, but in him.

I know, someone will say, look at Job. God and Satan did not conspire together to test job. Satan hated Job because God blessed him. God acknowledged to Satan that Job was in his (Satan) hand and commanded him not to kill him. Basically the book of Job is about Job and his friends seeking the counsel of men and trying to figure out carnally why he was going through what he was going through. The first 31 chapters of Job are about the wisdom of men trying to figure out why Job was where he was at. Job even tried to rely on his own right standing. It was not until chapter 32 things start coming to light. Elihu begins to rebuke Job and his friends and for six chapters he starts rebutting everything Job and his friends said about the situation and what they thought God was doing. Finally in chapter 38 God speaks and says a startling thing. 38: 2 God ask Job, who is this who darkens counsel by words with out knowledge. God basically tells Job, you missed it because you do not know me. In chapter 42 Job repents and says this in verse 3: Therefore I have uttered what I DID NOT UNDERSTAND! You see, he did not know God and thought God was punishing him when it was his mistaken view of God, his character and his total misunderstanding of Satan.

There is so much to say and the church has so mixed covenants that many people are feeling like God is against them and is bring destruction in their lives. If it’s killing, stealing or destroying in your life, it’s not God.

I also have to say to the brother who says God made you sick for taking medicine that you may want to re-evaluate that. God will use doctors to heal you and medicine that makes you well is from God. His best his for you to receive healing by his word and your faith, but he will work with you until you get to that level of faith. In the mean time, take medicine. The only medicine God does not acknowledge is using witch craft to heal.

I know this in incomplete, but if you really want to know God, look at Jesus. The only person he was angry with was the religious rulers, and it’s the same today. He loves them, but despises the fact that they totally misrepresent him. They drove people away from him. We are under Grace, not Law. The only purpose for the Law today is to reveal sin. If you are picturing God like he was under the Law, you will be miserable and think he is punishing you. Sin pays a wage, stay away from it.

God says he will NEVER LEAVE OR FORSAKE US, if you feel God is far away, then check your life out. Sin will condemn you and make you feel like God is millions of mile away, but he is right their with you. You do know as a Christian he lives in you now and you do not need rules and laws to please him. The law is now written on your hearts. Learn to live out of your heart, be quick to repent if you get off track and learn the true nature of God, especially toward born again Christians. Romans chapter five needs to be read. If God loved you as a sinner how much more now that you are his child??

Trucker

it is always interesting when people do not want to give credit to God for diseases plagues illneses etc... we do reap what we sow but God created the curse to be what is reaped in those cases. nothing just happens but God is in control, He is not idle or passive.

God said " i wound and i heal i kill and make alive" He also said it is Him who makes mens mouths dumb

Does God punish us

I knew this post would raise some eyebrows. Again, people do not understand the difference between the new covenant and the Old. People have so confused the Law with Grace. It’s the number one reason the church is in such a mess today. The Mosaic Law was written to the Jews and the Jews only. If you read I corth 10:32 it address three groups of people. The Jew, the Greek (gentiles), and the church of God.

The law was never written to the church of God, nor the gentiles. The problem is, we take the Law which is one part of the bible, look at and try to implement it into the church age. Under Law, wrath was revealed. It is the only Covenant God made with man that was conditional. God said if you do this, this and this you will be blessed. If you do not, then you will be cursed. To be in right standing with God, you had to obey the WHOLE LAW which was impossible. The wrath of God was laid on Jesus Christ at the cross. God is not mad at the world or you as a Christian. Yes, the law of sowing and reaping apply and we can eat the fruit of our own way, but God is not the author of sickness, disease, death or destruction. Isa chapters 52 thru 54 clearly reveal this. Roman chapter five clearly tells us that God loved us while were sinners, John 3: 16-17 clearly tells us that God did not send his son to condemn us, but to save us. II corth 5: 17-21 clearly lays out that God is not imputing men’s sins against them, but he wants them to be reconciled to him through Christ. When we receive Christ we become new creations in Christ.

As christens we are saved from the wrath to come, and we will NEVER experience the wrath of God. In the flood and in Sodom and Gomorrah, God took the righteous out of the way and protected them when wrath fell, but God is not dealing with men through anger or wrath today. Now, there is coming a time of wrath on this earth, just read revelation, but our job is to tell the world, that God is not mad at them, he has provided a way to him and it’s a free gift. That gift is Jesus Christ. People hate the church because we are telling them, God is mad at them, will kill there kids, make them broke and destroy their lives if they are not perfect. Heck, we even told them that God authored the world trade center bombings and the Tsunami. Even Abraham had better sense then to believe that lie. Gen 18:23 Abraham asks God, would God destroy the righteous with the wicked? God is not in the business of destroying people. We are doing a good enough job of that ourselves by not implementing Gods word in our lives.

All the destruction you see on this earth is because men are yielding to Satan. Does God correct us yes? If we continue to yield to sin, we can be turned over to SATAN for the destruction of the flesh so the soul will be saved. However, God is not the one doing the destroying. No, he is not allowing it either, we are by going our own way.

If you as a Christian think God is going to put sickness disease, death on you when you mess up, then you will never draw close to him. You would serve him out of ungodly fear. Godly fear leads to repentance, but that does not mean cringing, scared to death fear. It means reverence and knowing you place before God. Fear is not Gods method of training us.

When we read in the bible about the Plagues of Egypt, you will see the first several plagues represented their Gods. They worshiped the Nile, made idols of frogs, and bugs. The real judgment fell when God allowed the first born to be killed. The other plague was God trying to show them that the Gods they worshiped were totally foolish. Give me a break, they worshiped frogs. LOL. But you must put this in proper perspective. This was all a prelude to the Law and God was trying to get his people to turn their hearts back to him. He needed to get the Law in so people recognized sin and turn from it. He needed to get the seed(Jesus) into the earth and the rate they were going; there would not have been a virgin left on the earth. Once Mary was impregnated years later, she bore the savior of the World who would come, fulfill the Law, then give us the new covenant of Grace. Romans chapter 5 verses 13 states, for until the law, sin was in the world, BUT sin is NOT imputed when there is no Law.

From Adam to Moses, sin was not imputed unto men. When the Law came, it was imputed. When Jesus died and raised again, once more sin is not imputed unto men. I hate to disappoint many Christians, but God is not mad at the sinner. He loves them and he is trying to get the church to tell them about the free gift of Grace not of works (eph 2:1-19) that he has offered to men. Again,we are to tell the world, that by confessing Jesus as Lord and savior you will be saved. It is not about works, its about grace through faith that they are saved. The sin problem was dealt with by the Father through Jesus Christ. Will you accept this free gift??

We must get back to the real gospel, not a bunch of traditions of men, and much of the rubbish we preach from our pulpits. Heck we tell people if they wear jewelry or pants, or have long hair, or have an earring or smoke God hates them. But if they quit doing these things he will love and accept them. That is pure trash. God ALREADY LOVES AND accepts them just the way the are. He is not mad at them or punishing them. He just wants them to know him and receive Jesus as Lord. Our actions have become our righteousness not our faith in Christ. Once a person gets born again, he goes through a life long sanctification process, but his works does not save him. Its his believe in Christ that does

Romans chapter six tells us that we should not use the grace of God to justify sin. We all know that sin pays a wage, DEATH. Its not God killing them, it’s the wages of sin. Heck just ask Ananias and Sapphira what the wage of their sin paid. Death. They got so scared that their sin was revealed it killed them. But it was not God. It says, Satan filled their hearts to deceive and he took advantage of that and it killed them.

I ask all of your to put aside your traditions and preconceived ideas about God. We must get people born again, and loving God. Out of knowing Gods love for them, they will draw near to God and all the junk will fall off. It may take some time; we all deal with areas in our lives. We can correct one another, within the body, but is must be done in love and tactfully. Matt 7 tells us the way we judge will be they way we will receive judgment. . So all of us, lets get to know the real Jesus and his Father and lets preach the real gospel message to the world!
