“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!’
“However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our report?’ So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
“But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have;
‘Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the world.’
“But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says,
‘I will make you jealous by that which is not a nation,
By a nation without understanding will I anger you.’
“And Isaiah is very bold and says,
‘I was found by those who did not seek Me,
I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.’
“But as for Israel He says, ‘All the day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.’” (Romans 10:14-21 NASB'95)
In the Old Testament and in the New Testament it was prophesied or it was spoken of a time when Jew and Gentile would become one people, under one God, as one spiritual nation under the New Covenant God has with both Jew and Gentile, by genuine God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, who is God the Son, the only begotten Son of God. Under the New Covenant God has with his people, Jew and Gentile, by faith in Jesus Christ, are one spiritual nation. Together we are spiritual Israel, the church.
[Jeremiah 31:31-34; Isaiah 42:4,6; Isaiah 49:6; Isaiah 66:18-24; Genesis 12:1-3; Matthew 12:15-21; Acts 9:15; Acts 10:34-48; Acts 11:18; Romans 9:4-8,25-28; Romans 11:1-36; Galatians 3:7-9,16,26-29; Galatians 4:22-31; Ephesians 2:11-22; Ephesians 3:6; Hebrews 8:6-13; 1 Peter 2:9-10]
The issue being addressed here in Romans 10 is that the majority of the Jews, who were God’s people (his nation) under the Old Covenant, rejected Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of their lives. And many of them were still trying to establish their own righteousness separate from God (apart from faith in Christ) and separate from God’s righteousness. They were holding on to the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, dietary, and circumcision laws, thinking that would make them righteous before God. But it would not!
And in Romans 11 we see how all the Jews who rejected Jesus as the Christ of God were cut out of Spiritual Israel. And all the Gentiles who believed in Jesus Christ were grafted into Israel. So Jew and Gentile, by faith in Jesus Christ, are the Israel of God, his one and only nation. But any Jews who believe in Jesus as the Christ of God can be grafted back into spiritual Israel, God’s holy nation. For, “if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (see Galatians 3:26-29 NIV)
So, if we are going to reach Jews, who are Jews by physical birth, and all other people (non-Jews by physical birth), with the message of the gospel of our salvation, it is critical that we know what the Scriptures teach on the subject of faith in Jesus Christ, and on what constitutes salvation from sin and eternal life with God, as taught throughout the Scriptures, and not as taught out of context in disagreement with the Scriptures, as a whole. It is critical that we teach what Jesus and his apostles taught, in whole.
And Jesus taught that if anyone would come after him that he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our lives of living in sin and for self, and if obedience to God and to his commands is not what we practice, then we will not inherit eternal life with God. But if we deny self, and we are putting sin to death daily, by the Spirit, and we are walking in obedience to His commands, in practice, then we have the hope of salvation and of eternal life with God.
For, by God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to God and to his righteousness in walks of obedience to his commands. Thus, sin is to no longer be granted by us to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience is what we obey, it results in sanctification and its end is eternal life with God.
[Matt 7:13-14,21-23; Lu 9:23-26; Jn 10:27-30; Ac 26:18; Rom 2:6-8; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-14; Rom 12:1-2; 1 Co 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Co 10:1-22; 2 Co 5:10,15,21; Gal 5:16-24; Gal 6:7-8; Eph 2:8-10; Eph 4:17-32; Eph 5:3-6; Col 1:21-23; Col 3:1-17; Tit 2:11-14; Heb 3:1-19; Heb 4:1-13; Heb 10:23-31; Heb 12:1-2; 1 Pet 2:24; 1 Jn 1:5-10; 1 Jn 2:3-6,15-17; 1 Jn 3:4-10]
And this is the gospel message that we must be giving out to the people, and which they must be receiving and putting into practice, by the Spirit, by the grace of God, continuing in this faith until the very end, if they are to have salvation from sin and eternal life with God, and if they are to be part of God’s spiritual nation, the Israel of God, his church, which includes both Jew and Gentile via this genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ. We must not be those to whom God is stretching out his hands to the disobedient and obstinate who refuse to deny self, die to sin, and obey our Lord, in practice.
For Our Nation
Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
