I know that abusing drugs isn't the right thing to do, but have also heard that various cultures do so as part of their religious ideologies. Is there any specific mention on drug abuse and it being looked upon as a sin in the Bible??

Ga 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Ga 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft *, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Ga 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

witchcraft = G5331 pharmakeia

medication ("pharmacy"), i.e. (by extension) magic (literally or figuratively).

Hope this helps !

G5331
φαρμακεία
pharmakeia
far-mak-i'-ah
From G5332; medication (“pharmacy”), that is, (by extension) magic (literal or figurative): - sorcery, witchcraft.

G5332
φαρμακεύς
pharmakeus
far-mak-yoos'
From φάρμακον pharmakon (a drug, that is, spell giving potion); a druggist (“pharmacist”) or poisoner, that is, (by extension) a magician: - sorcerer.

The "pharmakeia" here is refering to a potion/spell . Nothing to do with modern pharmaceuticals.

We are told to be sober minded and to not get drunk. This can be applied to any drug.

On the last day of the feast Jesus cried out "If any man thirst let him come unto me and drink" John 7:37.

The words are still true today. "If any thirst let them come uto me and drink" This spake of the 'Holy Spirit'

Drugs, and all the rest of such 'stuff' looked upon today as essential in human life are utter tripe when compared to the 'fullness of life' offered by Jesus.
