Jesus' last recorded words are included at the beginning of this book: "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" - Acts 1:8. The Book of Acts meticulously records how the followers of Jesus received the Holy Spirit and, through His power, shared the Good News of salvation.
Acts was written by Luke and is a sequel to his Gospel. Luke desired to give an accurate account of the birth and growth of the Christian church. Several portions of the book include the pronoun "we," indicating that Luke was an eyewitness to some of the events recorded here.
Jesus has returned to heaven, but the promised Holy Spirit provides His continuing presence in His followers - John 14:17. The resurrected Savior is the central focus as the apostles fanned out across the known world with the message of salvation. As Peter stated: "There is no name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12.
Acts is the story of the birth of the church. You are continuing part of the story started so long ago by brave men and women who loved the Lord and followed Jesus' command to be His witnesses "to the end of the earth."
God Bless,
Dan
