Not sure if i posted this in the right spot or not.I want to have a closer walk with God,a stronger relationship. What kind of fast would i need to take to get closer to God?Thanks and God Bless

ive just started reading a book on fasting by Jentezen Franklin. it's brilliant if you can get ahold of it. i can't personally tell what the best fast is. there are three different kinds in the bible, including different lengths. there is the fruit and vegtable fast, water fast and the no food and no water fast. these can go for as short as one day and as long as 40days. (its good to note not to go a whole 40 days on the no food and water fast unless you notify a doctor). only you can know which is best for your circumstance. also if you havnt done a fast before or havn't done one in a while, try one on a smaller scale so you don't set yourself up for downfall.

i can also tell you what i'm doing if it helps. i'm also seeking a deeper relationship with God and a number of other things. im not largely fimailar with fasting so ive set a goal of seven days on the fruit and vege fast. ive also chosen to do this at the begining of next year, which is arriving very shortly. i think the time is suitable because it will start you off on a new year of new possibilieties new lengths or a clean slate if you like.

i hope this is usefull for you and i wish and pray your hearts desire after God, He will truly reward your willingness.

Hello 4Given

The Bible doesn't order us any kind of fasting, Jesus has fasting 40 days, the Old Testament also told about many kinds of fasting, all were written for teach us.

Now the reason of fasting is to achieve a quiet time with God or like you said: "... a closer walk with God,a stronger relationship", so you personally will decide the kind of fasting you may walk through it, it could be for several hours or days, but don't give the fasting all your interesting, cos fasting is a means and not a purpose.

As my experience I stopped of eating for a while until I feel hungry with a quiet period of praying and meditation.

We don't want to torture our bodies for God doesn't accept such a fasting, He gives us the body for worship him, and not for worship ours.

I Hope I added something useful to your walk with God.

Yours prayerfully,

We don't want to torture our bodies for God doesn't accept such a fasting, .

that is true. in fasting the body gets quite dried up (tired..) and we can worship him (more) in spirit (and in truth of course).

The purpose of fasting is to quiet ourselves to hear from God. Its not to force Gods hand, but it is to be used to put the flesh under to enable you to hear from God. Personally, Isa 58 gives good guide lines for the fast.

I usually just drink liquids in moderation like water and soup broth. I deny the flesh to hear my inner man. Many times our flesh dominates us preventing us from hearing from God. The fast conquers this.

Fasting can be done for answers, on the behalf of someone else as you pray for them or just to spend quality time with God.

The big key is why are you doing it and are you seeking to hear from God or just using it as a way to manipulate God. Many people think by not eating is something you can use to say to God, See, look what I have done for you now you must move in my life.

No, God is pleased with our faith. Are you fasting in faith and expecting God to move because you know he listens and hears your prayers. I john 5: 14-15.

Bottom line? Fast to spend intimate time with our Lord. Time in his presence will get you the fellowship and answers you are seeking!

Dear 4given, you can fast for example for 8 hours without any food, but be sure to spend these hours in prayer, bible study and meditation in God;s presence - this brings the benefit of the true spiritual fast - using the time with God.
