It's a known fact that, in order to gain God's perspective on a matter, we turn to the Bible. What I do not know is how to find the passages in the Bible that apply to the areas of concern? (I know that the Bible won't be so specific as to say "do not befriend Sam" but will speak about it from a broader perspective.)
You will have to read the Bible over and over again. The Bible is the revelation of Jesus Christ to mankind. Concentrate on the New Testament and the Holy Spirit will guide you and teach you everything you need to know.
When you are on top of the New Testament then the riches of the Old Testament can be explored.
Alright. I do read the Bible everyday. But I usually find that I do not encounter a revelation of the meaning of the passage unless I go and Google for a commentary on said passage.
Also, even if I do read the Bible over and over again, how will I remember which chapter dealt with which topic/theme?

The Old Testament is rich and wonderful but it is the New Testament that we live in and under now. You must study enough of it to truly understand Gods promise and grace that leads us to eternity.
Always remember this, as you personally make your own discovery of his truth for us and, don't let anyone tell you different,... If you discover what you think is a truth, test the spirit and if this truth can lead to a positive outcome or result, then it is of God.

Your question is very valid---Do you think that all pastors preparing a sermon remember all the content and locations of the subject matter they need, (no)---They have many study aids available to them that categorize by subject matter----For example most verses on illness, despair, joy etc. etc.-------Just google something like pastoral study aids or something like that------I personally have never used them and have just locked myself in with the word itself and used it as a commentary to itself----I would suggest that you have a bible that has a center column of verse cross references----That will help and so will a full concordance so if you just remember but one word of what you are looking for you can find the passage by using the concordance----Plus the word says that the Holy Spirit will bring all things to your remembrance------------One thing of vital importance is memorizing verses from the Scriptures, " Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against you"----Also remember the address of it at the same time----It takes time perseverance and discipline, but all of that is part of your Christian experience.
As far as commentaries go I suggest you look up the Matthew Henry's complete Bible commentary.
If you wish to understand the bible from the veiwpoint of a contemporary I also suggest looking up the Flavius Josephus. He gives insight into the biblical happenings because he was actually there. I believe his work is called "The antiquities of the Jews".
The most important thing in the Christian Life is to have met Jesus. To have had an experience of meeting Him .
Biblical knowledge is good, but more importantly is to have fellowship with Jesus every day. This will bring such experience that when you read the word, Jesus will enlighten the truth contained there-in.

Hi and good morning. There are so many things that come forth at times when I read posts that I don't know the exact words to seek in my bible, and when that occurs I've found that I can go to Google, ask the closest thing I can think of such as how many wives did King David have, and be presented with many answers from different bibles sources, and/or ministries. Hope this helps; I use it quite often, and it normally gets me started in the right direction.

you might want to read some more, and note that there is a conversation between the Lord God and His chosen People. the bible is simply (not without teaching) a documentation of a relationship between a people and the Lord their God. of which affirms if you are experiencing the same, then its the same God of Abraham. so, the bible is not there to give you instant answers, why would a Living God that is known strictly through His Word now made flesh we know as Jesus Christ want you to not communicate with Him if you are one of His?
if you need answers, then you have to go to the source. the people in the bible did. therefore if you are seeking the same God of Israel, then you have to do as they did when it was acceptable to the Lord their God.
