Fitness Question?

Hi,

I'm not a fitness guru, and haven't done much research yet, but I was wondering........

Is it better to eat dinner before working out and running, or working out and running before dinner. I would personally like to do my workout/run before dinner, but which is better?

Also, if it's better to workout before dinner, what are some simple high energy foods I can eat prior to my workout. I don't really want to spend 20.00 dollars for a can of energy powder, make a shake, etc, etc before my workout. I've read before that bananas provide a lot of energy.

Any suggestions would help tremendously. Again, haven't done much research yet, as I'm starting a workout plan, but I can't seem to find anything stating to workout before or after dinner. Thanks

Howdy,
It is better to work out 1st. Your muscles in the arms, legs, etc, are serrated & they need energy to be used, more if you are using them to workout. The energy is delived to each cell via the heart muscle which is different than the arm or digestive muscles. Now the digestive muscles are smooth. When you eat you need to digest, again digestion makes the smooth muscles works harder too. So if you eat 1st & then try to work out you are dividing your energy to thin because it is making ball 3 muscle types work harder. You can have a light meal like toast or a energy protein bar about a 1/2 hour before.

And yes bananas are good (they are fatty). So is any complex carbohydrate like toast, oatmeal, etc. Stay away from simple carbs like surgar, apples, oranges, etc. They are good for you but have a lot of simple surgars which go right to the blood stream & cause an insulin release to get all that surgar into the cells & that then causes you to crash.

Some studies say a cup of coffee is benifical too.

Hi! I just thought I would provide some polite clarification to the previous post.

Hands down, working out before your meal will provide for much better nutrient partitioning when you have dinner.

Nutrient partitioning = the ingested protein goes quickly to start rebuilding protein breakdown from your workout, and carbohydrates go quickly to start refilling glycogen stores, so that you have energy for your next workout.

The clarification I wanted to provide was this: it's technically not true that bananas are fatty. They DO have a higher sugar content than most other fruits, but depending on your goals (and especially the timing), this may be ok.

Same with the oatmeal, apples, and oranges mentioned. We allow our clients to eat those nearly any time they like, assuming they are also having some protein at the same time.

Timing is truly the issue here. There are times that we *want* an insulin response... and there are times we don't.

I hope this helps, and God bless!

Try smashing a banana in your hand & let it sit there for a few its good for your skin anyway) & then try to wash it off with water. You'll see some fat in that little monkey morsel (hmmm or maybe it was the chocolate around the outside that had the fat. Course there is a fair amount of sugar too but there is 3% fat in a plain naner.

I always took a nice protein/energy drink after my work out for the benefits F4J talked about. Get the stuff at Walmart the pharmacist can you choose.
