But this [I say]: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. [So let] each one [give] as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 NKJV
If many of us were completely honest, we’d have to admit that we find it hard to give. In the Bible, though, God strongly encourages His followers to give generously. In the Old Testament, for example, the prophet Malachi wrote, “’Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it’” (Malachi 3:10).
In light of this verse, isn’t it possible that our reluctance to give toward God’s work here on this earth has less to do with simple selfishness and much more to do with our lack of trust in Him to provide what we need to care for ourselves and our families?
The Bible teaches that that is backward thinking. God promises that when you give, you put yourself in a position to receive blessings from above.
Prayer: Lord, give me a generous heart, a heart that takes great joy in giving when I see others in need.
