Good Man

Mat 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I DO, that I may have eternal life?

Mat 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but ONE, that is, God:
but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Mat 19:20 The young man saith unto him, All these [commandments] have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
Mat 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Mat 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

When Jesus said "Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God" he was not denying his deity, he was addressing the problem inherent to human thinking. We think that if a mans conduct is good, it makes the man good, but Jesus says man always judges himself and others by what he does, and God judges the heart.

The man answered him "I have kept the ten commandments since I was a kid" yet Jesus proved to him that he had not, by getting very literal.

Jesus said "Go then... love thy neighbour as thyself." and how did the man respond?

Mat 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away filled with sorrow.

The heart of man does not naturally "Love his enemies, bless them that curse him, do good to them that hate him, and pray for them which despitefully use him, and persecute him;" (Matt 5:44) indeed, the human heart is not even capable of being that good. Jesus was telling the man the man a truth he did`nt want to hear, the same truth stated by the Apostle Paul, that in the heart of man "dwells NO GOOD thing" (Rom 7:18)

Jas 4:5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Who are the "humble" who receive this grace? Those who are willing to confess "there is none good but ONE, that is God"

Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by [keeping the commandments], but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by [keeping the commanments]:for by [keeping the commandments] shall no man be justified.
Gal 2:17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.
Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

That is the good news. Where sin is bound in the heart of man, grace walks in...

Rom 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of ONE shall many be made righteous.
Rom 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace [entered] and did much more abound:
Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Do you see it?

There is none good but ONE, that is, God

There is none obedient but ONE, that is God.

Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are [clearly seen], which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Does this not prove you and I are not good, and not even capable of being good, despite how good our conduct is? The flesh is rotten to the core.

Every fruit that is produced by the flesh, has only the seeds of flesh in it, no matter how much it "looks" like one of Gods fruits...but every fruit that is produced by the Spirit...ah, GOD can be found at the heart of them apples. (John 3:6)

“But the fruit which the SPIRIT OF GOD produces is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Galatians 5:22)

Good man reading this, you are no good. You are never going to be good. You are as bad as the baddest man who ever lived, as bad as the baddest man in town that you look down upon. You will never DO what only ONE can do. Your flesh is never going to produce "fruits of righteousness" Your only hope is to throw yourself on the mercy of God.

Luk 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
Luk 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
Luk 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

Luk 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
Luk 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
