In the Old Testament we read that after the children of Israel had sinned against God, and did not follow God’s leadership; because of their iniquities God sold them into the hands of their enemies. And the people were then carried away and taken captive, and held under hard bondage. Most people might view being carried away and taken captive as a physical captivity, but scripture also shows that being carried away into captivity can also have a deeper spiritual meaning.
In 2 Timothy 3:1-7 we read 3 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
In the above we see sinners leading away captive other sinners by their own lusts.
It is written in Psalm 125:5 As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.
And it is written in Isaiah 9:16 “For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.”
So instead of following the lead of the good Shepherd, they were instead being led astray by workers of iniquity.
Jesus said in Matthew 15:14 “Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”
So this being led and taken captive takes on a deeper spiritual meaning. Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:26 “And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
This being carried away and taken captive can happen when people are led astray by false doctrines as is shown in Hebrews 13:9 “Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.” And in 1 Corinthians 12:2 “Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.” Also keep in mind, it is written that covetousness is idolatry.
In the Revelation we see the Dragon trying to carry away the woman with a flood coming out of his mouth in Revelation 12:15 “And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.”
And we see the Dragons efforts were successful with some in Revelation 17:7 “And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.”
So the moral of the story is, follow the lead of the good Shepherd Jesus Christ, or you will be led astray by the false doctrines of evil men and the leaders of this evil world that cause people to err from the Truth and go into captivity.
It is written in Revelation 13:10 “He that leads into captivity, shall go into captivity.”
So be patient unto the coming of the Lord, in doing so you also possess your souls. Peace
