Heavy Music?

Why are people, especially Christians so opposed to heavy music such as metal? Especially when such bands are singing about Jesus. Some may ask how a band can sing about Jesus when there is screaming or deep guitar playing. This i can answer. Ever feel the pain? Ever feel sorry? The pain of separation from Christ? The sorrow we feel after we rebel against God by sinning? These all relate to that type of music. I'm not saying all metal is appropriate, but some can be and people should not shun it. Especially when you are a teen with such mixed and confused feelings, this music soothes that condition.

The hills are alive, with the sound of music

Music is all in personal taste. I don't care for metal music, but I love rock.
I don't think that everyone disagrees with Christian metal music at all. Where I live in Canada, each summer they have this get together called Godstock. Metal music is played there and when I have been there, I have listened.
Maybe David in Psalms would get up and play some metal, who knows?
God loves singing. I have heard it said that those who sing to God, pray twice.

As for pain, even classical music has pain in it. Secular rock music has musicians in it that are searching for God.

Anyway, if it is all in pain perhaps you should listen to some uplifting music too, to balance out your life. You sound like you need some comforting.

1 Chronicles 16:23
Let the whole earth sing to the Lord! Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.

# Psalm 33:3
Sing a new song of praise to him;play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy.

And to you Crazy for Christ, one of the more familiar Words of our Lord.

Matthew 11 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Amen and a prayer for you:Pixie:love: :sun: :rainbow:

Personally I have never liked anything loud or heavy in music. I found this about different types of music.

Question: "Contemporary Christian music - is it honoring to God? Should it be used in church services?"

Answer: Some fifty or so years ago, dairy farmers discovered the playing of soothing music encouraged cows to produce more milk. Since more milk meant greater profits, farmers began installing sound systems inside their dairy barns. One major dairy producer capitalized on this innovation by advertising "Milk from contented cows."

Oddly enough, the sweet strains of music very often produce an entirely opposite reaction among Christians. Instead of contentment, hostile disagreements over selections in worship music have become a leading cause of congregational infighting and even church splits! To our shame, there are believers who sulk and fume from their pews if their particular brand of musical tastes is not satisfied. Studies and surveys in churches are showing that music ministers are among the most stressed in Christian ministry.

Musical tastes are as varied as church members themselves. There are those who love the old hymns while others much prefer a more contemporary flavor. Some music ministers have attempted to appease everyone by blending the old with the new. Other churches offer two separate worship services each Sunday--one being traditional and the other a contemporary service. Still, there are churches that tenaciously cling to old-fashion tradition. I know of a local pastor who is fond of bragging, "You won't hear any contemporary music in our church! We remain true to the old hymns!" What he fails to realize is that even the old hymns were "contemporary" when they were first written! In contrast, I once attended a church in which the music was played at an ear-splitting volume resembling that of an armored vehicle crossing a minefield.

There are those who argue the old hymns are a tangible link to our past. This is certainly true, for these hymns have surely withstood the test of time. Many of the old hymns, too, are rich in Christian doctrine. The lyrics of Charles Wesley or Martin Luther, as examples, give magnificent instruction in sound Christian theology.

But can we not make similar statements favoring contemporary Christian music? Yes, we certainly can, for there are some wonderful Christian artists glorifying the name of Christ Jesus with their talents. Should we deny their musical contributions based solely upon the fact their songs are fresh and new? To do so sounds rather legalistic and since when has unbending legalism brought honor to God? Far too often we allow our own personal taste in music to become the standard for what music is glorifying to God. Instead, we should allow, even promote, Christian freedom and grace in musical preferences.

People are always asking if drums or keyboards or, yes, if electric guitars belong in the church. All musical instruments are, in themselves, neither good nor bad--they are amoral. So the question is this: Does a style of music edify believers while bringing honor and glory to Christ Jesus? If so, then what difference does it make if the accompaniment is provided by a piano or a guitar? Perhaps Ephesians 5:19 is the answer to this issue in that it promotes worshipping the Lord and encouraging other believers in three different "styles" of music, "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord."

God bless  :rainbow: :rose:

if i could dear brother CFC i would post a link and there you can see about metal bands like P.O.D and other bands which are bad POD is a band that is fully tattooed and consumes alcohol ( they told themselves in a magazine ), have a 666 sign in the album cover in the "O" of the POD. if you didnt know, 666 is the mark of the devil, the devil uses those kinds of bands to divert us from Christ to rock.... Rock music isnt bad but remember the LORD in it always and dont listen to those bands that pervert your mind.....If you Like Rock then listen to " Disciple , RED and ask me for more Christian Rock Bands "....GBU

When I was a teen back in the 80s I was a metal head. I listened to Ratt, Dokken, Motley Crue, Poison, and many others. But the music had definite satanic overtones. Even the imagery of many of the groups was of a satanic nature, everything from pentegrams and flaming inverted crosses to goat's heads and satan himself.

As the 80s became the 90s I just found myself less and less attracted to the music. And my tastes changed. I began listening to a lot of rockabilly, country, and classic rock. Guys like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash.

So, I'm not really a fan of metal at all anymore. Not even Christian metal (I just don't think metal is an appropriate mode of praise music).

Really I feel like it really depends on the person themselves. The older generation sometimes look at it as being of the world but really it is another way of worship. Sometimes they ask why you would listen to something that you cant understand. For those of us that can understand what they are saying, it really is a great witness. I myself love harder christian music.

I mean you cant really look at a type of music as being bad. I mean if you say the hymnals are so much better for worship then what makes you say that? Not everyone likes one type of music that is why there are so many different types. Hymns are great and so are all the other types of music.

Ax ~ Actually, the symbol in the "O" in POD is the Trinity. Why do you see three 6's?
Many Christians do consume alcohol, it's the drunkedness that we are advised to stay away from. Just as with anything. (gluttony)

I also think liking heavy Christian music is a personal thing. What I think the original poster was saying was why do some Christians specifically hate it and think it's demonic just b/c it's not their idea of pretty melodies and so on? They don't realize that these bands also reach people for Christ. I think some people try to define Jesus and lock it down to just certain characteristics. But we cannot limit God and His ways, for He can reach people through that lyric, thru that passion that singer is displaying. All of the created is different because He is. :)

Christian metal has been around for so many years, it is far from being a new thing - as has the argument against metal music, and various types of hymns versus modern/contemporary music etc etc etc - this does appear to be an age old argument!! But why do so many poeple focus on the heavy metal styles of music as 'demonic' or 'satanic' are we not just giving the spiritual enemy recognition or credit that he certainly doesnt deserve, being an imitator rather than an initiator!! We hear so many people putting down metal and heavy rock, yet ignore in those argument about various types of rap/hip hop/reggae/R'n'B where drugs, violence and sex are very openly encouraged and sung about - infact so much of the pop music industry can be said to be now sold through the use of sexual imagery or 'loose' moral values - yet these dont seem to be raised in the same way - why is this?

I think we need to focus more on Christ Himself rather than how people access a relationship with Him - as long as their journey with the Lord is something special - then whom are we to judge - every single person on this planet has different tastes in music! and the Holy Spirit will place discerment on individual hearts.

I also want to say I am not a metal or rock fan - i am just someone who is a little tired of it being blamed for so many 'bad' things in this world. I can often get alot of 'jip' for my taste in music, which includes a range of folk, world/tribal fusion, Indian jazz to name a few and I have CD's that people think are UnChristian - which I persoanlly dont understand, simply because they are singing in gaelic or hindi - but I am sure that people whom listen to rock and metal might be ina position where they dont understand the constant critisism of their taste, their celebrtion of sound.

I think its easier to not care what others think, except what Jesus thinks and says to you through the Holy Spirit. Man is a sinner, so why should you care for their opinions if they are not edifying or Holy Spirit motivated? I'm not saying that its not possible the Holy Spirit can use a person to reach out to another to avoid such music, because we know not all "Christian metal" is truly Holy Spirit inspired whatsoever.

I'm aware you like P.O.D. Investigate them with an open mind for Jesus, not self and you will see they are not truly worship music, Holy Spirit inspired at all. I won't post info here, but you do the research. Use Google and type something like "p.o.d. not christian" for example. You'll see they, like many others are not quite something Holy Spirit motivated.

I've learned that adrenaline pumping kind of music can be a little overwhelming, dangerous sometimes. Since I was 7 or 8 years old, I've listened to Guns N Roses. They are my favorite band, but I'm 100% aware that the music can be too powerful. It is not inspired by the Holy Spirit, it is 100% secular and I acknowledge this. GOD is working with me in this area of secular music because it can be dangerous and really, plain stupid stumbling block in the way of maturity and growth in Christ.

Did you ever wonder why people, usually become more calm and relaxed as they get older? Its generally the same in our growth with Jesus. We become more humbled, more Christ like. Can you imagine Jesus listening to heavy metal? I personally cannot. While I don't think its necessarily important of the style of music, I just think it is a natural process that as the Holy Spirit works within us, we grow, mature and lose old things, gain new things in Christ just as Paul explained. Remember, the devil is a liar, deceiver and all he does is that. He will use Jesus, Christianity and music in a deceitful way. The devil [Lucifer] was given the gift of music before his fall, remember that. Rock n' roll is a clear origin of his own.

Please keep in mind that the main issue is the message, not style of music. Also, their fruits.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

John 15:2
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

God calls us to be worshippers

If you think it's pleasing to God then go ahead. But please do research on the band.
In verse 1 John says, "Test the spirits whether they are of God", why

1. Matthew 7:15--"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." They won't announce who they are; they will mask themselves and appear to be moved by the Holy Spirit.

I pray for discernment, I personally don't like heavy metal, I love praise and worship. I like rock but not heavy.

It's good to be radical for Jesus, but where do we draw the line from " taking from the world and being part of the world. It seems the same to me, but we must ask, what message am I getting from this, how does this help my walk with God. Is this pleasing to God, does it make me a light unto this world.

If you get a yes , then amen keep rocking.
It's a personal walk,
God bless everyone...
