A fool spurns a parent's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence. Proverbs 15:5 NKJV

Maybe heed isn’t the most common of words. Meaning “to give consideration or attention to,” its synonyms include regard, note, and listen to. However we say it, though, guys should take the idea to heart.

Proverbs 15:5 says men who heed correction show prudence—other Bible versions say they’re “sensible” (HCSB) or “wise” (NLT). Today’s verse declares that it’s folly to ignore or turn aside “instruction and correction” declares that it’s folly to ignore or turn aside “instruction and correction” (AMPC), and scripture overall comes down hard on fools. Resentment kills them (Job 5:2); their mouths invite ruin (Proverbs 10:14); honor does not befit them (Proverbs 26:1); they will be servants to the wise (Proverbs 11:29).

We might be tempted to think Proverbs 15:5 is only for teenagers, young bucks who live at home and play tug-of-war over Dad’s rules. But many of us older men have a “father in the faith,” as Timothy did with the apostle Paul (1 Timothy 1:2). And even if we’re old as Methuselah, we still have a Father in heaven. When any of these parent figures speak, it behooves us to listen…to heed what they say.

Never let pride prevent you from hearing the lovi0ng discipline of someone who cares deeply for you. Heeding their words today can save you a ton of grief tomorrow.

Prayer: Father in heaven, may I always heed Your correction—and the discipline of those parent figures You’ve put in my life.
