Hey all,
Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful forum for Christ!!
The #1 reason I came here is because I am a sinner. I am a sinner that struggles everyday, and I need encouragement.
I am involved in student ministries, and have been for 3 years now. I have some wonderful high school students that have been warriors for Christ in their short time on earth. On the surface, I couldn't have it better. I would gladly lay down my life for my wife, my kids at the church, and my family.
But I am struggling with my walk. I studied biology and chemistry in college, and while professors would challenge my faith everyday, I found it somewhat funny to think that they actually believe in the things they do.
But recently, as I am about to turn 31, I began studying what I really didn't learn in college. I am fascinated by biology, how it works, and I can truly see the hand of God on everything that is created.
However, there is a movement in this country that is very sad, and extremely scary to me that I have become increasingly aware of lately. And of course, Satan will attack you at your weakest places, and maybe this is one of mine.
There was a story on a very prominent website recently about the modern atheists, and how they are becoming more vocal in our world. None of them are as vocal as Richard Dawkins, a professor of zoology and a highly respected atheist at Oxford, an author of many books, including "The Selfish Gene," "The Blind Watchmaker," and most recently, "The God Delusion." I have to admit I have read these books, and I have become increasingly scared that the devil is trying to attack me into believing what these guys say. Another vocal atheist is Sam Harris, author of the books "The End of Faith," and "A Letter to a Christian Nation." Of course they both have extremely liberal agendas, but being the thinker that I am, I always keep up with current events when it comes to non-belief in this country and our world. These guys have the goal to persuade those who might be in the middle of belief and non-belief to move to atheism. These guys are extremely brilliant, and there stories are really intriguing, however incorrect they may be.
Here is how Dawkins characterizes our God, Jehovah, whom he calls the "God of the Old Testament:"
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. (Dawkins, The God Delusion, 2006 p.31)
Dawkins is currently touring the United States and Britain, reading parts of his books, answering questions, calling Christians out and then signing autographs afterward.
Let me just say this thing up front: His characterization of Yahweh sputters forth with utter heresy against our faith, and this is NO way to help the atheistic cause, except to cause a stir amongst far left atheists, and Christians like me.
However non-convincing this seems to all of us, this book is sweeping our country. Its #3 on the Amazon US website, and #1 in England.
Dawkins, and his colleagues and followers, make a very convincing case for evolution, that could easily lead people astray from the true Word of God.
Am I struggling with this? YES. Without a question the Devil is trying to attack me into believing this heretical nonsense.
James 1 tells us to "consider it all joy when you face various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. And let patience have it perfect result, so that you may be complete, lacking in nothing."
So I DO count it all joy to struggle with this wave of nonsense. But its extremely difficult. Again, I am a sinner, I recognize that I need a Savior, and I claim the name of Jesus Christ as my eternal redeemer.
Any encouragement our thoughts on this matter would greatly help me out. And again, thank you for allowing me to be here.
