Hi Angel! You have taken the first step by responding to the conviction that God is giving you through His Spirit.
Next you need to ask God for strength and wisdom to make the right choices.
When the temptation comes along see it for what it is; thank God for the chance to obey and make the right choice, the one that honors Him.

Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
Eccl 5:1-2
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matt 12:36-37
If any man offend(harm) not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
James 3:2
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
James 3:5-6
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
James 3:8-10
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Eph 4:29
Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
Col 4:6

If we can give referance to things said, we might draw a better understand of why, and why not, therefore getting nearer to being overcomer`s through Christ Jesus.

1.Fear of God;Keep thy tongue from evil, And thy lips from speaking guile
Psalms 34:13 (ASV)

2.Attention to your thoughts;I said, I will take heed to my ways, That I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, While the wicked is before me.
Psalms 39:1 (ASV)

3.We should praise Him with our Tongue; Let my tongue sing of thy word; For all thy commandments are righteousness
Psalms 119:172 (ASV)

4.Remember that there are virtes and vices at the tip of your Tongue;

A.The lip of truth shall be established for ever; But a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Prov 12:19 (ASV)

B.The tongue of the wise uttereth knowledge aright; But the mouth of fools poureth out folly.
Prov 15:2 (ASV)

5.Yes the tongue is a natural part of Sin, it is part of the flesh, is it not;For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue muttereth wickedness
Isaiah 59:3 (ASV)

6.Brotherly love, yes it is capable; For, He that would love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips that they speak no guile:
1 Peter 3:10 (ASV)

Remeber brother, it`s not what goes into a man that defiles him it`s what comes out. Our tongues are a very hard thing to control, and I believe the true control is established in the Heart, through the spirit of God and His Word.

Amen

Angel, one thing you can do is limit the amount of time you spend with people who gossip. Even if they're family members, when the gossip starts you can tell them, "Gotta go!" and head for the door. You don't have to stay and listen to that stuff.

Hi Angel,
as above brothers have shared you some scriptures,i'm here to present a method that helps me and others:
the way is: practising living in His presence, which means awareness in everything you do and say even think are all before Him,for "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account."(Heb4:13) the fear of God is neccessary,as we long for show Him our love~(ps119:11 " I have hidden your word in my heart / that I may not sin against you.")
and you can suppose/imagine that if the person you are going to talk about is there with you, what will you do..?guess that may change some of the speech:) "speaking the truth in love"and"Do everything in love."
hope i wrote it right.
May God help us as we are willing to do His will~!
grow with you in Christ,
Krystal

Mat 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
Mat 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Mat 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Mat 5:46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
Mat 5:47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
Mat 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Rom 12:14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

Luk 6:27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
Luk 6:28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
Luk 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
Luk 6:30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
Luk 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
Luk 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
Luk 6:33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
Luk 6:34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
Luk 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
Luk 6:36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
