I don't know if there is another chapter in the Bible as doctrinally important as John 1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God....
But that's not the part of John 1 that I want to discuss here. Let us move down to verses 10 through 12 here.
John 1:10; He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
John 1:11; He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
John 1:12; But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
This chapter of John starts off letting us know who Jesus is. He created everything, all of creation came into being through Jesus.
He was God before creation was ever created. But when it was created, Jesus became a human man, at least for a while.
He came down and dwelt among us. Among His creation. God with us. Emanuel.
But it says in verse 10 here, that even though he made the world, the world did not know Him. ( the people of the world ).
It says here, that He came to His creation, His own people that He Himself made.... and they did not receive Him.
The word "receive" here is interesting.
paralambanō
par-al-am-ban'-o
From G3844 and G2983; to receive near, that is, associate with oneself (in any familiar or intimate act or relation); by analogy to assume an office; figuratively to learn: - receive, take (unto, with).
Total KJV occurrences: 50
This is contrasted with the next verse.
lambanō
lam-ban'-o
A prolonged form of a primary verb, which is used only as an alternate in certain tenses; to take (in very many applications, literally and figuratively [probably objective or active, to get hold of; whereas G1209 is rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while G138 is more violent, to seize or remove]): - accept, + be amazed, assay, attain, bring, X when I call, catch, come on (X unto), + forget, have, hold, obtain, receive (X after), take (away, up).
Total KJV occurrences: 263
Notice the word "lambano" is in one verse, and the word "paralambano" is in the other verse. One word starts with "para". The other does not. One group did NOT receive Him.
But there is another group that will receive Him. If anyone receives Him, they have the right to be called Sons of God.
When He came to His own, they didn't even acknowledge Him. They wouldn't even greet Him. The thought here is, they wouldn't even say Hello to Him.
But anyone else. Anyone at all. Who "receives" Him. Who takes hold of Him, who acknowledges Him. Who believes in Him. Those people have the right to be called the sons of God.
You have to make a choice. You have to accept Him. You have to a hold on Him. It is your choice.
He wanted His own people to accept Him. But they did not. You still can. You have to receive Him.
