“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians 4:19-20 ESV)
I haven’t been feeling well for several days. Some of it is sinus congestion, but most of it is fatigue. So I have been resting a lot. And when I don’t feel well I am not as strong emotionally, either. So I cry more easily. And some of what I cry over is the spiritual condition of my nation and of the church in my nation and over the hearts and lives of so many who are professing faith in the Lord Jesus but whose lives do not reflect that he is Lord of their lives.
And I was taking some of these situations to the Lord in prayer this evening when he put in my mind the song, “Breath of Heaven.” The song is about Mary, the mother of Jesus, when she was pregnant with Jesus. I think this is the author of the song imagining what it must have been like for Mary, and some of the thoughts that might have been racing through her mind. And the author imagined Mary wondering what she did to deserve this honor.
And the honor was that she was chosen to carry inside her body the Son of God, God the Son, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit. And when I heard those words I began to cry. Why? Because when we believe in Jesus Christ to be Lord of our lives, he, in the person of the Holy Spirit, comes to live within us, and so we carry within us the Son of God who is God, God within us. Oh, what an honor!!
Are we deserving of such an honor? No, we are not. Why? Because we are born into this world with sin natures, in the image of Adam, the first man to sin against God. So not one of us is deserving of our Lord’s salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and that we would get to carry the Son of God within us, not physically, but spiritually. And we cannot even come to faith in Jesus unless God the Father draws us to him and he gifts us with such faith.
Now Mary was a young girl, and she was human, so she probably was frightened to some extent by the awesome task of carrying the Son of God within her. And she probably did feel very alone at times because most people would have considered that she got pregnant out of wedlock and so they would not have thought highly of her, and many may have shunned her and mistreated her, and maybe some friends deserted her, too.
And when we carry the Son of God within our lives spiritually, and so we now live for him and no longer for self, and we follow his plan and purpose for our lives in going where he sends us, and in doing what he commands, and in speaking the words he has for us to speak, it can be overwhelming at times. And we may, at times, find ourselves a bit frightened by the awesomeness of the responsibility and by the mistreatment we might receive from others because we follow Jesus with our lives, for it can hurt.
And it can be very lonely, as well, because we live in a world where the majority are not followers of Jesus Christ, not even all who profess to believe in him. We live in a sin-sick world with so much evil happening every day, and with so many people opposed to the message of the gospel which Jesus taught, and which his New Testament apostles taught (in context). And so we may find ourselves walking this path alone, at times, when we lack encouragement and support from other followers of Jesus Christ.
And so we may cry out to the Lord in prayer, and ask him to “hold us together” because, at times, we may not feel like we are all together, for we are hurting. And so we pray for the Lord to be near us and to comfort us and to give us the strength and the wisdom and the endurance to keep going, even in the face of adversity, and even if we don’t have much support emotionally and spiritually. For we know we are called of God to carry His Son, and to take the message of the gospel to the people of the world.
And what’s that gospel message? Jesus said that if anyone would come after him he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. For this is what faith in Jesus looks like. And he said, basically, that if we hold on to our lives of living in sin and for self that we will lose them for eternity. But if for Jesus’ sake we deny self, die daily to sin, and we now walk (in conduct, in practice) in obedience to his New Covenant commands, then we have salvation from sin and eternal life with God.

Breath Of Heaven (Mary's Song)
Songwriters: Amy Lee Grant / Chris Eaton
I have traveled many moonless nights
Cold and weary with a babe inside
And I wonder what I've done
Holy father you have come
And chosen me now to carry your son
I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now
Be with me now
Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you are holy
Breath of heaven
