I would like to understand if the Holy Spirit as a concept was present in the old testament? Or there are more explicit mentions only in the new testament? Please help.

Hello @smartammo,

Looking to the very beginning of Genesis we see The Spirit of God in (Gen 1:2)

'And the earth was without form, and void;
and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.'

* The second reference to the spirit of God is in (Gen.6:3)

'And the LORD said,
My spirit shall not always strive with man,
for that he also is flesh:
yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.'

* And in relation to Joseph, Pharoah says, in (Gen 41:38)

'And Pharaoh said unto his servants,
Can we find such a one as this is,
a man in whom the Spirit of God is?

* And God spoke to Moses concerning the men chosen to work on the making of the tabernacle and it's furnishings, in Exodus:31:1-6:-

'And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:
And I have filled him with the spirit of God,
in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,
To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,
And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.
And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan:
and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom,
that they may make all that I have commanded thee;'
(Exo 31:1-6)

* These examples of references to The Spirit of God are just the first steps in a major work that could be engaged on, if a full understanding is sought. Comparisons could then be made with the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Yet looking at just these three references above we see both The Holy Spirit, and also the gifts of the Holy Spirit seen in the power to devise and construct, to God's design, the fabric and furniture of the temple. That equipping can be seen in the New Testament also, can't it? In the equipping of the New Testament saints with the gifts and graces that only the Holy Spirit could give. Also in the empowerment of Apostles to fulfil their function as ministers of God to both Israel and the Gentiles.

Thank you

'And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him (Moses),
and took of the spirit that was upon him,
and gave it unto the seventy elders:
and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them,
they prophesied, and did not cease.'
(Num 11:25) (see v.16-30)

Hello @smartammo,

Here again (above) is another reference to The Spirit of God, and yet another concerning Joshua, in (Num 27:18)

And the LORD said unto Moses,
Take thee Joshua the son of Nun,
a man in whom is the spirit,
and lay thine hand upon him; ... '
These were found with the use of a concordance. I use one downloaded from www.e-sword.net. You could work your way through the Old and New Testaments in this way, and get such joy as well as knowledge from each reference within it's context.

Thank you
Within the love of Christ our Saviour,
our Lord and Head.
Now risen and glorified
and sat at God's right hand.
Chris

Sir, the Holy Spirit is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Of course he existed in the Old Testament. He has always existed and will always exist. He is the first and the last. He conceived the Son of God (Matthew 1:18, 1:20, Luke 1:35). God anointed the Son of God with the Holy Ghost (Acts 10:38, Isaiah 42:1). And Jesus Christ called that holy Spirit which is dwelling in him, his Father (John 14:10).

God is holy (Leviticus 11:44)

God is a Spirit (John 4:24)

My friend, please seek God in his Word…

Hey @Rejoice evermore. Thanks. I know the fact He has been there always. But wanted notes from the scripture and also wanted to know how to find those scriptures. @complete has given me a way to search for stuff. Thanks!

1 Samuel 16:13-14 -Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.

'God is a Spirit:
and they that worship Him
must worship Him
in spirit and in truth.'
(Joh 4:24)

Hello @Rejoice evermore, & @smartammo & @Rockerduck,

It is interesting to note, that In the verse above, regarding the words, 'God is a Spirit': ( i.e., God is not flesh, or material substance, but spirit, not, 'a spirit' ). He is not 'a spirit', but 'spirit' in substance: for He is called in Hebrews 12:9, 'the Father of spirits'. Also, (importantly) the words, 'the Father of spirits', (see Num. 16:22; Job 33:4; Eccl. 12:7; Zech.12:1) does not refer to angelic beings, but the newly-created spirits of His 'sons'. The new creation in Christ Jesus. Praise God!

'And they fell upon their faces, and said,
O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, ... '
(Num 16:22a)

'The Spirit of God hath made me,
and the breath of the Almighty
hath given me life.'
(Job 33:4)

' Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was:
and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.'
(Ecc 12:7)

'The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD,
which stretcheth forth the heavens,
and layeth the foundation of the earth,
and formeth the spirit of man within him.'
(Zec 12:1)

* How wonderful the word of God is, isn't it? What joy and delight it gives.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris
