Power

At the beginning of Acts, Jesus' followers appear confused and fearful. But by the end of the book they are well on their way to transforming the Roman world with the gospel. What accounts for this dramatic change? Acts 1:8 provides the answer: “You shall receive power.” But notice:

The power promised was not force or political authority. Israel had enjoyed superiority under David and Solomon, but those days were a distant memory. Jesus was not indicating a revival of Jewish dominance. Instead, the word “power” means ability or capacity. Jesus promised that once the Holy Spirit came upon them, His followers would have a new ability.

The ability had more to do with being than doing. The believers would “be witnesses”.not just “do witnessing.” Evangelism is a process, not just an event. It involves a total lifestyle, not just occasional efforts.

The power came from without, not from within. The believers were not to manufacture their own ways of proclaiming the gospel, but to look for supernatural ability from the Spirit to make them effective in gospel presentation. The power came when the Holy Spirit arrived, not before.
The believers were to be witnesses to Christ, not to themselves. They were to make disciples not to themselves but to the risen Lord (Matt. 28:18–20).

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

No clearer statement of the intimate interworking of the triune God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—and especially of the Spirit's powerful role can be found in the Old Testament than in Isaiah's prophecy of the Servant of the Lord (Is. 42:1–9). The passage summarizes the redeeming work of all three Persons of the Trinity in the salvation of the lost. Thus it ties together in remarkable harmony both the Old Testament and New Testament understandings of God's grace. It also sheds light on our understanding of the Holy Spirit.

Some Bible readers assume that the Spirit's activity in Scripture is limited to the New Testament. But actually He is just as active in the Old:

The Spirit participated in creation (Gen. 1:2; Job 26:13; Is. 32:15).
The Spirit gives life to humanity and the other creatures (Ps. 104:29–30). It is interesting that when Genesis says God endows people with life by breathing into their nostrils the “breath of life” (Gen. 2:7), the word for “breath” is the same word translated elsewhere as “spirit”

The Spirit strives with sinners (Gen. 6:3), which is perhaps related to His work in convicting people of sin (John 16:8–11).

The Spirit came upon certain judges, warriors, and prophets in a way that gave them extraordinary power: for example, Joshua (Num. 27:18), Othniel (Judg. 3:10), Gideon (6:34), Samson (13:25; 14:6), and Saul (1 Sam. 10:9–10). However, the Spirit later departed from Saul because of his disobedience (16:14).

The Spirit played a prominent role in the long span of Old Testament prophecy. David declared that “the Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue” (2 Sam. 23:2). Likewise, Ezekiel reported that “the Spirit entered me when He spoke to me” (Ezek. 2:2).

The Spirit inspired holiness in Old Testament believers (Ps. 143:10). And Scripture promised that someday God would put His Spirit in His people in a way that would cause them to live according to His statutes (Ezek. 36:27).

The Spirit was crucial in helping God's people anticipate the ministry of the Messiah. For example, Isaiah 11:1–5 is a trinitarian preview of the working of the Father, the Spirit, and the Son, who is the Branch of Jesse. Looking forward to the ministry of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit inspired Isaiah to prophesy: “The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him” (Is. 11:2), inspiring God's Chosen One with wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, fear of the Lord, righteousness, and faithfulness. Thus we come full cycle to the New Testament, where Jesus claimed to be the fulfillment of this prophecy (Is. 61:1–2; Luke 4:18–19).

The Promise of the Spirit

Joel described the time when God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh as “afterward” (Joel 2:28). He is believed to have been referring to the days of the Messiah, which were to follow the period of restoration (possibly from the exile; Joel 2:18–27).

Peter quoted Joel's prophecy of the Spirit in full and claimed its fulfillment at Pentecost (Acts 2:16–21). In a way of speaking, that makes Joel a spiritual “grandfather” of the church. Christians are now experiencing the Spirit in fulfillment of Joel's promise. However, the prophet also describes other events associated with the “day of the Lord”.which it appears will not have their ultimate fulfillment until the end times.

Empowered for Ministry

If you've ever assumed that God's work in the world is accomplished primarily by ordained clergy, then you need to look carefully at Jesus' words to the hometown crowd of Nazareth. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me”.He declared, applying an Old Testament prophecy to Himself (Luke 4:18–19; Is. 61:1–2). “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21).

The promise fulfilled was that the Messiah had come and would do all of the things foretold in the ancient text. But the text went on to make more promises about what would happen after the Messiah's initial work: “You shall be named the priests of the Lord, they shall call you the servants of our God” (Is. 61:6).

This would be a profound change. The tasks of “ministry” would no longer be done just by priests, rabbis, or clergy, but by all of God's people. Just as the Spirit of the Lord had come upon Christ, enabling Him to accomplish God's work, so the Spirit would enable Christ's followers to accomplish God's work, too.

If you are a believer in Christ, God has empowered you with His Spirit. Are you carrying out His assignments for you?

Thank you for such a great and awesome post.
The teaching of Holy spirit manifestation in the old testament is rarely taught and many believers think its just for new testament. You've expanded our knowledge on this relevant issue. God bless.

praise God for his spirit is righteous and true

prayer is essential to every child of God, as children of God we can see how the adversaries of darkness and evil are working against our lives to work destruction and damage.

sometimes when praying , speaking to God, Christians do not know what to ask of God or what to pray concerning some things.

BUT as - Rom 8:26 ....... Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our " weakness " infirmities: - for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The Spirit of the Holy Father knows the mind of the Spirit - God's very spirit - Christ / the Anointing is making intercession with our very spirit knowing the mind of our Spirit with intercession to God for us and is communicating with our spirit.

we are praying through the " SPIRIT OF THE SON " - which is the Anointing , of the Spirit Holy, of God -

Gal 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Jesus is the ANOINTING of the Holy Spirit -in our lives - - the installation, placement, application, positioning, stationing, appointment, applying of the Spirit, Holy, Of The God in our lives.

His Spirit is the Spirit of the Father Creator in the manifestation, morph , form of what is being applied, ANOINTED - placed, applied, positioned, stationed, appointed, working, rubbing, moving anointing - the idea of contact; to smear or rub with oil, to handle); to furnish what is needed; (give an oracle, “graze” [touch slightly], light upon, etc.), that is, (by implication) to employ or (by extension) to act towards one in a given manner: - entreat, to apply and to use.

This is the role of Jesus the Anointing in that his sacrifice was shed through the eternal spirit of God - that Gods Spirit has applied for our salvation and communication to him, we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus, the anointing, the manifestation of God

God's Holy Spirit became a conduit through or by whom Jesus was offered.

Eph 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

2Co 5:5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

Holy Spirit gives the Spirit-filled Christian a spiritual prayer language > speaking in tongues > praying in the spirit.

1Cor 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.

Acts 19:5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

Acts 10:44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.
45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.
46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,

Mark 16:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

No such thing as a sign gift (Charismatism) rather than a spiritual gift . . not seen with the eyes. . . viewed with a new heart

God is no longer bringing any new revelations as scripture. . the tongue of God . Why desire more that he has given us.? There is no laws by which we could know him more intimately or adequately ... Are you aware of any?

Praying in the Spirit is being strengthened by the Holy Spirit in order to bring prophecy, the poetic tongue or language of God . Clearly seen the chapter of the old testament "Song of Songs" A parable that shows the labor of the husband love drawing the bride. .

God singing prophecy to us making new music in our new born again hearts. .

Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Now the sign seekers as those that demanded the things seen before they would believe made Jesus the Son of man into a circus seal .In effect saying ;Prove you are God perform a trick work a miracle.

John 4:48Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

John 6:30They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

Matthew 11:16-18King James VersionBut whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

Acts 16:25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, (moved by God's Spirit) and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

What the prisoners did not hear is again We have piped senseless tunes unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. as sounds without meaning that some call tongues and the Holy Spirit did not dance.

No such thing as sign gifts (self edifying) Look to the foundation of the doctrine of tongues (Isaiah 28)

In John 16:13, the Holy Spirit has the role of leading us in truth, in Ezekiel 36:26-27, the Spirit has the role of leading us to obey the Torah, and in Psalms 119:142, the Torah is truth. In John 16:8, the Spirit has the role of convicting us of sin, and in Romans 3:20, it is by the Torah that we know what sin is. In Acts 5:32, the Spirit has been given to those who obey God, In Romans 8:4-14, those who are born of the Spirit and walk in the Spirit are contrasted with those who have minds set on the flesh who refuse to submit to the Torah. In Galatians 5:19-23, everything listed as works of the flesh that are against the Spirit are also against the Torah while all of the fruits of the Spirit are aspects of God's nature that are in accordance with it. In Romans 2:25-29, the way to recognize that a Gentile has a circumcised heart is by observing their obedience to the Torah, which is the same way to tell for a Jew (Deuteronomy 30:6), and circumcision of the heart is a matter of the Spirit, which is in contrast with Acts 7:51-53, where those who have uncircumcised hearts resist the Spirit and do not obey the Torah.

The Torah is a oral tradition of the fathers . It is not prophecy. . . the word of God as it is written by the finger of God .

It opposes the word of God it does not add to it.

Is the Torah not the OT??

From what I understand it is a mixture of prophecy and the oral traditions of dying mankind as if mankind could serve two teaching masters as one Lord
Oh from what I understand it is the OT n it is written man does not Live by bread alone but by every Word that proceeds out of the Mouth of YH..

At one time all teachings were oral .
There was no alphabet or any sorts stories of what YH did for His peep were passed down by Word of mouth...

So do u not believe the OT is the Word of God?

How do you reconcile that view with Jesus' words in Matthew 5?

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”

The old testament has Yeshua all ova you can not Hear Him??

In Deuteronomy 5:31-33, Moses wrote down everything that God said without departing from it, so it is the word of God and does not oppose the word of God. All of God's commands were given by God, so they all have the same authority regardless of whether He wrote them down, He told Moses to write them down, or even if He has just spoken them without anyone writing them down. Christ quoted three times from Deuteronomy in order to defeat the temptations of Satan, so he had it memorized and he affirmed its authority. The Torah is God's word and Christ is God's word made flesh, so he embodied God's word by setting a sinless example of how to walk in obedience to the Torah, and as his followers we are told to follow his example (1 Peter 2:21-22) and that those who are in Christ are obligated to walk in the same way he walked (1 John 2:6).

I was enquiring of Garee. For myself, I believe the Old and New Testaments are inspired by God from the first verse of Genesis to the last word in Revelation - one coherent story of God's gracious salvation and redemption from beginning to end.

I believe the whole testament old and new is the living abiding word of God .

Yes all teaching of Christ that worked in mankind's earthen body of death .

Powered by God as He poured out His Spirit on them . They would never say the power was of their earthen flesh and not the unseen spirit of life. Remeber his word is Spirit as spirit life given . .we have no power to rise from the dead.

2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

The word of God was passed down by the finger of God .The Holy Spirit hewn out the two tablets and wrote on both sides . . .leaving no room for the oral traditions of men . When Moses came down they refused to believe in a God not seen and continued their oral traditions making the word of God to no effect . Moses destroyed the two tablets

The second time he moved Moses the apostle this time Moses hewn out the two tablets and a gain the finger of God wrote on both sides . . no rom for the oral traditions of men (paganism)

Exodus 32:15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

Exodus 34:1 And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.

It set the standard on how can we hear what God says to all born again believers . Not of any private interpretation coming from the will of dying mankind.

2 Peter 1:19-21King James Version19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

There simply is no defence against the armor of light of God as it is writen

Exodus 34:1 And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.

Exod 31:18; When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.
Deut 9:10; "The LORD gave me the two tablets of stone written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.

Deut 4:13; "So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.

Deut 10:4; "He wrote on the tablets, like the former writing, the Ten Commandments which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me.
