That's the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone's duty. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 NLT
The Bible called Solomon the wisest man in the world (see 1 Kings 4:29-34). At Solomon’s very specific request, the Lord had gifted the young king with the wisdom he knew he’d need to lead the people of the then-great nation of Israel. For many years, Solomon used that wisdom to serve God and lead his people spectacularly. Sadly, though, he spent his latter years serving himself by chasing more wealth, more power, and more women—all while seemingly forgetting his God and his earlier vow to love and obey the Lord all the days of his life. The results were disastrous.
Many believe that Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes near his life’s end, as he looked back and recognized the folly of chasing after the wrong things, after anything but God’s well-deserved glory. If that’s true, then it gives even greater weight to his wise counsel that we should “fear God and obey his commands.” As men who know Jesus as Lord and Savior, that is our duty—and our privilege.
Prayer: Lord God, I want to glorify You in everything I do. May I never forget to honor You, love You, and obey You.
